Fire guts Ogun Free Trade Zone as two injured in autocrash on Third Mainland Bridge

 

Fire erupted on Sunday morning at the Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, Ogun State and spread from an industrial facility to adjacent residential areas.

Online videos showed thick black smoke billowing into the sky, with intense flames engulfing factory structures.

Emergency responders were seen arriving to combat the blaze amid chaotic scenes as residents evacuated the area.

As of press time, authorities have not confirmed the cause of the fire, and there are no reports of casualties or injuries.

The fire incident was reported to have begun around dawn and is believed to have originated from a gas explosion at a foam-producing company within the industrial park.

The fire quickly escalated, damaging several nearby homes before firefighters could intervene.

Director of the Ogun State Fire Service, Fatai Adefala, confirmed the incident, stating that emergency teams were on the ground to quell the fire.

“The state firefighters’ team from Agbara and Ota have been on the ground doing the needful for over three hours,” Adefala said.

In a related development, two persons were injured on Sunday morning when a loaded mini truck carrying perishable goods fell on its side on the Third Mainland Bridge near the Unilag waterfront, Lagos, traffic authorities have reported.

In an update on X (formerly Twitter), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, confirmed that the vehicle had been recovered, but transloading of the goods was still ongoing.

“The vehicle involved in the earlier reported accident on the Third Mainland Bridge by Unilag waterfront inward the Island has been finally recovered.

“Trans loading of the goods is yet to be completed as we await another truck to complete the trans loading,” LASTMA said.

In an earlier post, LASTMA explained the situation and measures taken to manage the traffic disruption.

“Video of a lone accident involving a loaded mini truck of perishable goods which fell on its side on Third Mainland Bridge by Unilag waterfront inward the Island with two casualties.”
