The Federal Government has disclosed plans to improve power supply through deliberate operational, technical and regulatory measures across the nation.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe made the disclosure while addressing journalists shortly after the Ministerial Implementation Retreat with Federal Authorities on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM) held at the Lagos State House, Marina on Monday.

Speaking on collaboration with the state government, Tegbe stated that a practical engagement ensued with relevant agencies and other stakeholders in the state.

He noted that Lagos axis alone controls about 40 to 50% of the demand for power in Nigeria, hence the robust discussion.

“As part of our effort to ensure that we provide 24/7 power supply ultimately to Lagos, we decided to make this very practical and engage with Lagos State Government.

”Our discussion focused on different areas. It focused on the market itself. We focused also on the regulatory space.

“We also focus on technical and operational matters. What we need to do to fix in the immediate term, what we need to put in place on a medium term, and what we need to do long term to ensure that we provide 24/7 to Lagos axis.

“I believe that Nigerians will start seeing some improvement in Lagos axis as our collaboration manifests,” he said.

The Minister further said that the team agreed to set up a joint technical working committee to be co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy in Lagos State, while members will be drawn from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Electricity Regulatory Board in Lagos.

”Overseeing this is a steering committee to be chaired by the Governor. I’ll be the co-chair. There are other three other members,” he added.

Also speaking, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said that the engagement was frank as real issues were discussed and analysed.

Sanwo-Olu assured that the outcome of the dialogue will be visible to all in the near future as the nation works toward stable electricity.

“We believe that our customers, our citizens, will in the very near future begin to see the outcomes of a very deep engagement like this.

“I am truly very impressed with the level of engagement that has come out of the meeting, and I believe this is the beginning of what the vision of Mr. President is for us to power our country, how we will ensure that we have a 24/7 power country, and that journey has started,” the governor said.
