FAVOUR ISHEMBER, Abuja
Authorities of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has attributed the current water supply shortage in Abuja City Centre and satellite towns to a major rehabilitation project aimed at enhancing the efficiency of two water treatment plants.
In a statement signed by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike on Public Communications and Social Media, residents are informed that water supply will be rationed for two weeks as only two of the four treatment plants will be operational during this period.
The FCTA explained that the four water treatment plants, with a combined capacity of 30,000m3/hour, have been operating below par, necessitating the rehabilitation contract awarded to Messrs SCC Nigeria Limited.
The project involves replacing and reinstalling electro-mechanical equipment in Phases 1 and 2, requiring a temporary shutdown of these plants.
To minimize the impact of the partial shutdown during the Sallah celebration, the two plants under rehabilitation will be temporarily activated to supply water to residents.
The FCT Water Board has developed a rationing schedule, alternating between Lines 1 and 2 of the distribution network, to ensure some level of water supply during this period.
The FCTA assured residents that the rehabilitation works are progressing rapidly, with contractors working around the clock to complete the project within the scheduled timeframe of two weeks.
Residents are advised to store enough water to cater to their needs during this period, as the supply will be rationed.
The FCTA appeals to residents to bear with them during this period, assuring that the rehabilitation project will enhance water supply services in the long run. The administration is committed to delivering better services to the residents of the FCT.
