FAVOUR ISHEMBER, Abuja
The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr Nyesom Wike has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing fair compensation and support to communities affected by the ongoing road construction project.
During a meeting with traditional chiefs and representatives of the Kpaduma and Guzape communities, the Minister emphasized that every affected individual would receive due compensation and Right of Occupancy (R of O) documents for new resettlement areas without further delay.
The meeting, held at the FCT Minister’s conference room in Lifecamp, aimed to address growing tensions surrounding the continued presence of residents in areas marked for development.
The Minister acknowledged the communities’ deep-rooted attachment to their ancestral lands but appealed for understanding, noting that government development efforts sometimes require difficult decisions.
Barr Wike assured the chiefs and their people of the government’s commitment to justice and fairness. “We are not here to displace anyone unjustly,” he stated. “This is about building a better Abuja for all. We will ensure your people are properly compensated and given legal documents for their new homes.”
However, he clarified that compensation would be paid only for structures along the road corridor and not the entire community.
To ensure fairness, the Minister directed that the compensation package be doubled. “I have told the Director of Resettlement to go and make a valuation. But the rate you people are using is too small. Increase their rate. If they are earning N50, give them N100,” he stressed.
The traditional leaders of Kpaduma and Guzape, led by the Sapeyi of Garki, Alhaji Usman Nga Kupi, expressed their appreciation to the FCT Minister for his transparency and willingness to engage them directly.
Acknowledging the development benefits the road project would bring, the traditional leaders agreed to cooperate with the evacuation and resettlement process.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with both parties committing to ongoing dialogue and collaboration to ensure a smooth and respectful transition for all affected families.
The FCT Minister’s assurance and the community leaders’ cooperation have paved the way for a harmonious implementation of the road project.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu, the Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, and other senior officials of the FCT Administration.
