CIISM names Chukwudera Anunagba fellow

On 15 August 2025, the Chartered Institute of Information and Strategy Management of Nigeria (CIISM) admitted Chukwudera Anunagba to the grade of Fellow, entitling him to the designation FCISM. The conferral places him among the small number of professionals the Institute recognises at its highest national honour and, read closely, it says as much about the Institute as about the man.

CIISM is constituted as a body corporate under Nigerian authority, with a mandate more structural than most professional associations would claim. It sets and progressively raises the standard of knowledge and skill required of its members, conducts professional examinations, maintains discipline within the profession, and keeps a published register of those entitled to practise as Chartered Information and Strategy Managers. That final duty is what gives the rest its force: a body that publishes a register can also remove a name from it, and it is that removable standing not a framed certificate that disciplines a profession.

CIISM registers members across six grades, from Graduate Member through to Distinguished Fellow. The lower grades are ladders, explicitly time-served: each requires a minimum tenure in the field, a knowledge and skill assessment, and an oral interview. The Fellowship sits outside that structure altogether. It is conferred by invitation only, following an independent, evidence-based review by a panel of established industry leaders who weigh the quality and scope of a candidate’s contributions against a standard of extraordinary and outstanding achievement.

The bye-laws are unusually emphatic about what the grade is not. Fellowship is granted solely on verified merit and the impact of a candidate’s professional contributions; it is not tenure-based, not conferred for years of service, and carries no entitlement arising from seniority or longevity. By writing that exclusion into its constitution, the Institute has made it structurally impossible to simply age into its highest honour.

“The Fellowship is the highest honour this Institute confers, and it is conferred on merit alone. Following an independent, evidence-based review, the Council was satisfied that Mr. Anunagba’s published contributions to the security and governance of information meet the exceptional standard the grade is designed to uphold. His election reflects the quality and national impact of that work, and nothing else.”
— Amb. Dr. Mrs. Temile Uduogho Oritseweyinmi, elected President of the Council, CIISM

Read against that framework, the conferral is legible. Anunagba’s qualifying record is one of published contribution, and it begins early. From 2022, while still an undergraduate, he was producing peer-reviewed work on the security and governance of health information systems at a point when the exposure of African digital health infrastructure drew little attention beyond specialists. His subsequent work extended into cybersecurity economics, zero-trust architecture, ransomware resilience, privacy-by-design and financial fraud detection. He has also served as a reviewer for internationally indexed journals, the unpaid gatekeeping work that signals peers trust his judgment.

He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Information Systems from Kennesaw State University, awarded cum laude in December 2024, and works as a Technology Analyst in the Chief Data Office of Barclays’ US Consumer Bank, where his remit is data lineage and data quality: establishing where a reported figure came from, and which source is authoritative when several disagree.

That his work now spans borders a standard conferred in Nigeria, applied to systems that recognise no single jurisdiction is less a contradiction than the condition of the field itself: data does not respect the parliament that chartered the person governing it. It is a responsibility the Institute’s newest Fellow appears to accept plainly.

“I am deeply honoured by the Institute’s recognition. I regard this Fellowship not as a culmination but as a responsibility to continue advancing the standards of information security, data governance, and strategic management on which our profession depends. I am grateful to the Council, and to the many colleagues whose work has informed and strengthened my own,” Chukwudera Anunagba, FCISM.
