Vice President, Kashim Shettima has commended First Bank of Nigeria Limited, saying it stands as a powerful symbol of the nation’s progress, economic strength, and ambition.
Shettima stated this Wednesday in Lagos at the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the new FirstBank Head Office at Eko Atlantic City.
He said, for over 130 years, the Bank’s operations in West Africa has been a pillar of economic growth, empowering businesses, supporting families, and fostering prosperity, stressing that this initiative, spanning from Cape Town to London, is a step toward global financial success, reinforcing our expertise in exports and long-term development.
“As we move forward, we must recognize that our people—farmers, business owners, and entrepreneurs—are the backbone of our economy. Their resilience, faith, and determination fuel our nation’s progress. The elephant, a symbol of wisdom, strength, and leadership, embodies our commitment to growth, vision, and Nigeria’s future prosperity.
“With bold economic reforms and strategic partnerships, our administration remains dedicated to fostering an environment where transformative projects like this can thrive. This is not just a new beginning—it is the foundation of a future that elevates, inspires, and drives lasting progress for our nation,” he said.
Also speaking during the event, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented a Certificate of Approval to the FirstBank Group for the construction of its iconic 40-storey eco-friendly headquarters in Eko Atlantic City.
Sanwo-Olu said the Bank has taken the lead, adding that it is his honour to be here today, witnessing the dawn of another transformative project.
“To signify our commitment, we will now present the official certificate of approval to FirstBank, allowing them to commence construction immediately. Let this be the beginning of another landmark achievement for Lagos and Nigeria,” he said.
“As First Bank leads the way, I challenge other financial institutions to follow suit. There is ample opportunity here in Eko Atlantic, and we will continue to provide a supportive environment for investment and development.
“To the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Governor, we appreciate your approvals and encourage you to extend the same support to other financial institutions seeking to establish their presence here. There is still land available, and we invite more investors to take advantage of this prime location.
“As we embark on this journey, let us remember that the responsibility of building Nigeria lies with us. No one will do it for us. The people in this room are the agents of change who will turn dreams into reality,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu who commended the leadership of First Bank, its board, and management for their boldness in embarking on this monumental project, maintained that the bank’s commitment to Lagos and Nigeria’s economic growth is commendable.
The Governor, however, noted that he has been to Eko Atlantic several times for groundbreaking ceremonies, witnessing numerous investments take root, but said today’s event is different.
According to him, this is not just another groundbreaking; it is the groundbreaking. It marks the beginning of an investment that will redefine the future of Lagos.
He said, “We must also take a moment to acknowledge the visionary leader who laid the foundation for this transformation—our President. I had the privilege of serving in his cabinet in 2004 when the idea of reclaiming land from the Atlantic Ocean was first introduced.
“At the time, it seemed like an impossible task. But through sheer determination and the belief of committed investors, Eko Atlantic City has risen from the ocean into a thriving metropolis. Mr. President, we commend your vision, tenacity, and unwavering belief in the potential of our nation.
“Today marks another chapter in that journey. Just yesterday, we laid the foundation for the Lagos International Financial Centre, a project that will position Lagos as a global financial hub. Our ambition is clear: Lagos must not only lead in.
“First Bank of Nigeria holds a unique place in our history. Established in 1894, it predates the formation of Nigeria itself. Its legacy of over 130 years is deeply intertwined with Lagos, reflecting a shared vision for progress and prosperity,” he said.
Earlier in his welcome address, Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank Group, Olusegun Alebiosu said the groundbreaking ceremony is a momentous occasion for the bank.
According to him, it signifies the bank’s commitment to repositioning sturdily as ‘the’ Bank for the future.
He said, “Therefore, this new head office complex is not just about a modern architectural masterpiece; it is about reimagining banking for generations yet unborn.
“It will serve as a hub for financial innovation, digital transformation and operational excellence; ensuring that FirstBank remains ahead in an era where technology is reshaping the industry.
“Situated in the heart of Eko Atlantic City, the iconic FirstBank headquarters complex – a 40-storey edifice will become the tallest building in Nigeria and West Africa upon its completion. It will be a symbol of strength, embodying the progress we have made as an institution and reflecting our ambition to set new benchmarks in service delivery, operational efficiency and customer experience.
“Beyond its significance to FirstBank and its people, this project will contribute to the broader economic landscape of Lagos, Nigeria and Africa. It will promote urban development and reinforce Lagos as a global financial hub,” he said.
Speaking further, the FirstBank boss noted that this remarkable milestone achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support and collaboration of many individuals and institutions. It is only fitting that we acknowledge those who have played an instrumental role in bringing this vision to life.
“We also acknowledge the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria, our regulators, and the various government agencies whose guidance and policies have helped to create an enabling environment for sustainable business growth,” he said.
The bank said that it is constructing a 40-storey edifice, set to be the tallest building in Nigeria. It described the project as an engineering and environmental marvel, featuring technologically advanced, eco-friendly, and sophisticated construction that will set a new standard for the financial services sector in Africa.
The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima; the governors of Ogun and Ondo states, Dapo Abiodun and Lucky Aiyedatiwa; the founder of Dangote Industries, Aliko Dangote; the co-founders of the Chagoury Group, Gilbert and Roland Chagoury; Dr Deji Adeleke; Tunde Folawiyo; Bukola Saraki; and other dignitaries.
