AKOR SYLVESTER, Chidimma Uchegbu – Abuja, Emmanuel Nlewedum, Port Harcourt
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that it would, from 2025, ensure that every state council establishes a youth executive council to serve as platforms for addressing youth-specific issues and deepening their participation in the trade union movement across the nation.
NLC president, Joe Ajaero who stated this Tuesday at the 3rd Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the National Youth Council of the NLC in Abuja also urged young Nigerians not to leave the country as a result of the present hardship, but to take their position and reshape the country for their good.
He said: “We need your voices, your ideas, and your energy in every corner of our union, driving the workers’ agenda with passion and innovation”.
NLC president said: “Today, we gather in a moment fraught with challenges, the tightening grip of economic exploitation, job insecurity exacerbated by the whims of neo-liberal policies, and the deepening inequalities that reduce workers to tools for profit. Yet, amidst this, I see hope. I see strength. And I see a generation ready to rise above despair to chart a new path for the working class and our beloved nation.
“Comrades, let us speak plainly. The harsh realities of our country cannot be sugar- coated. We live in a nation where the rich grow fatter on the sweat of the poor, where our youth struggle to find meaningful work, and where the value of labor is often trampled underfoot. A bag of 50kg rice sells for N105,000, transport from Abuja to Portharcourt is above N50,000, decent Housing has become a mirage while basic healthcare is out of reach as basic social services become elusive even as we have to struggle to get some Governors to pay us a paltry N70,000 National Minimum Wage; the product of a Law passed by the State? Anyway, this is not a time for lamentation; it is a time for determination.
“No one will build our nation for us. Running away is not an option; there is no promised land elsewhere. It is here, on our soil, that the battles must be fought and won.
“You are not just the future of Nigeria, you are the future of the trade union movement. That future, comrades, does not exist on its own. It must be built, shaped, and fortified by your resilience, your courage, and your vision. If you fail in this responsibility. others those with no allegiance to workers or their welfare-will hijack that future and shape it in their own image, for their own gain.
“Our task, therefore, is clear. This movement is not empowering you out of charity or sentiment. The youth are being equipped because we recognize that the strength and future of the Nigeria Labour Congress depend on you. We need a union that is resilient, adaptive, and future-proofed against the storms of exploitation and oppression. This is your charge to take the torch and illuminate the path for a stronger, more united trade union movement.
“They want to force you to “japa.” Do not “japa” If you “japa” the future of the movement will “japa” and the whole nation will be imperilled”.
Reflecting on the theme of the occasion: Youth and the New World of Work: Imperative of a New Social Contract, Ajaero said, “the world of work is changing rapidly automation, gig work, and global economic shifts are rewriting the rules,
“In this new landscape, workers must not only defend their rights but also renegotiate the social contract. That contract must centre on justice, fairness, and equity. It must reflect the realities of our time and ensure that workers are not left behind in the race for profit.
“Who will lead this charge? You, comrades. You must define what fairness and justice. look like in this new world of work. It is your resilience that will challenge exploitation It is your vision that will reimagine workers’ rights.
“It is your collective action that will create a future worthy of the sacrifices of those who came before us
“As a youth, you must reimagine our nation. You must reimagine the trade unoon movement. And, you must reimagine the critical role that you can play in shaping this platform and using it to build a nation that works for all.
“It is definitely not a bed of roses. You will be resisted; you will be brutalised and you will be disparaged and vilified even by those you seek to serve. However, you must remain focused and keep your eyes on the ball.
“The massive suffering in our nation must be queried and who is better placed to do this than the youth working within the trade union movement? The increasing workplace rights abuse and violations in our nation must be continually challenged and your voices are needed for success.
“We cannot have a new social contract without overcoming the resistance of those who are favoured by the old system. You cannot make an Omelette without breaking an egg. It requires your foresight, your commitment and perseverance to achieve a breakthrough. We therefore urge you to rise and occupy your place”.
Continuing, the congress president noted that: “As the global shifts continue, mind shifts become imperative All manners of impediments will be put on your path but that is where your strength and determination will be measured. You will be excluded in many instances but do not be discouraged. Sometimes, some in their 60’s and 70’s will usurp your rights claiming to be youths but you must creatively overcome it. Like we say, if you are not at the table, you are on the menu. When you are not allowed to sit at the table, do you break the table or bring your own table? We may not give you the best answer now but by all means, always find a way in all national discourses to be at the table.
“It is important that we commend the outgoing leadership of Congress National Youth Council. You have all done exceedingly well and have made us proud at the different fora you have had cause to represent us. Our flag was flown at fall strength and we doff our hats! To the leadership that may emerge today, we implore you to find resobe within you and creatively make the Council more contributory to the progress of Congress and indeed our nation. While ascension to rublic office is important, what we do with it is of greater importance so, NLC charges you to hit the ground running from tomorrow driven by the same zeal with which we have seen you pursue your leadership quest to seek the attainment of the key objectives of the Council.
“At this point, it becomes pertinent to thank our partners who have stood by us and supported us in all our efforts at building a vibrant Youth Council, The LAX, FES and ASC will constantly be remembered. NLC remains eternally grateful while we bo increasing support as the days roll by.
Finally, we charge all youth with this; Do not shirk your responsibility. The labor movement is counting on you. The nation is counting on you. And remember, you are not alone. The NLC stands firmly behind you, ready to support, guide, and fight alongside you in this struggle for a better tomorrow.
“Let us unite and build a movement that cannot be ignored, a Nigeria that cannot be undermined, and a labour force that cannot be silenced. Together, we will shape a future of dignity, justice, and solidarity for all workers. Stand up our youth!”.
Earlier, in an address, the chairperson of the 3rd NLC youth conference, Tolulope Fagbamigbe said the youth are the powerful drivers of change and should be given the necessary tools to fight for positivity and change the narratives.
