May Day; Oyibo, FOBTOB boss charges workers to reclaim ‘their civic space’

…Lauds members’ courage, resilience over socio-economic challenges

UFOMBA UZUEGBU

President of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association (FOBTOB), Comrade Jimoh Oyibo, has charged workers in the country to reclaim their civic space, ensuring that workers’ voice echoes within the corridors of power.

He urged Nigerian workers to advocate vigorously for policies which engender job security, fair wages and humane working conditions.

Oyibo, who stated these in a goodwill message to mark this year’s May Day celebration, stressed that workers must demand relentlessly, transparency and accountability from the nation’s leaders. He said they (workers) must also constantly advocate for policies that genuinely reflect the needs and aspirations of the working class.

“By uniting our efforts, we can dismantle barriers and construct a civic space where worker, regardless of their position or sector, feel valued and empowered. Moreover, reclaiming our civic space necessitates an unwavering commitment to championing the rights of all workers, particularly in sectors where inequalities are most glaring. We must express our solidarity not only to our teeming members, but also those in precarious employment, facing heightened struggles”, Oyibo added.

The FOBTOB boss commended members for their courage, resilience and collective spirit demonstrated across the nation. He enjoined Nigerians to seize the occasion of May Day to reinforce their dedication to a just and equitable society.

” As a Union, we must engage all stakeholders constructively (employers, regulators and government), to shape policies that promote industrial harmony, enhance social protection, and ensure sustainable livelihoods.

“As we look into the future, may this May Day reignite a collective sense of mission and a renewed determination to forge a future characterized by decent work, inclusive growth and social justice”, Oyibo stressed.

The theme of this year’s May Day is; ” Reclaiming the Civic Space amid Economic Hardship “.
