Fubara unveils 19.79km road to address hardship in riverine communities

Emmanuel Nlewedum, Port Harcourt

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has described the reconstruction of the 19.79-kilometre Buguma-Degema-Abonnema Road as a major milestone for his administration, noting that a project once considered an imagination has now become a reality.

Governor Fubara stated this on Monday during the commissioning of the road, which links communities in Asari-Toru, Degema and Akuku-Toru Local Government Areas.

He said the project was particularly dear to his administration because of the deplorable state of the road, which for years subjected residents and motorists to hardship.

The governor recalled that he once felt ashamed driving on the road during a ceremony in the area, stressing that the condition underscored the urgent need for its reconstruction.

He said, “With the completion of this project, the negative experiences associated with this road will become a thing of the past,” the governor said.

He added that the ultimate objective of his administration is to execute projects capable of directly impacting the lives of the people, and noted that tangible development remains the best way to demonstrate government’s commitment to the people.

Governor Fubara further stated that the successful delivery of the road has strengthened his confidence in seeking the support of the people for his political party.

While acknowledging that more infrastructure is still needed across riverine communities, he assured residents of his administration’s commitment to the completion of the ongoing Trans-Kalabari Road project which he described as another significant intervention that would further open up the area and enhance economic activities across the Kalabari Kingdom.

The 19.79-kilometre Buguma-Degema-Abonnema Road, awarded in September 2024, involves the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the road and seven bridges.

Inaugurating the Buguma-Degema-Abonnema Road project, the Amanyanabo of Abonnema, King Disreal Gbobo Bobo-Manuel, commended Governor Fubara for responding to the longstanding demand of the people for the reconstruction of the road.

The monarch said the project has not only transformed transportation in the area but has also opened up riverine communities to greater economic opportunities.

According to him, the improved road infrastructure would lay the foundation for a future industrial revolution in the area by making the communities more accessible to investors, businesses and other economic activities.

King Bobo-Manuel also commended the governor for the ongoing Trans-Kalabari Road, describing it as another major intervention capable of further connecting Kalabari communities and accelerating development in the region.

He said the project has demonstrated that government can make a significant difference in the lives of rural and riverine communities when their infrastructure needs are given priority.
