Attack on Akpabio: Strategem for democratic perdiction

EMEKA UDO OLAKA

One does not need to go to the Ouija board or the planchette to ascertain or confirm the aphorism that the deluge of attacks, tantrums, tirades, vituperations, allegations and labyrinthine network of acrimonious effusions that have been erroneously hurled against the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Godswill Akpabio, are all as a result of a well – circulated and crafted plot insidiously designed to pull down the nation’s nascent democracy by some evil clique of mesophelian manipulators and political mafiosos.

Senator Godswill Akpabio has unfortunately been under intense attacks following the allegations of “sexual harassment” preferred against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti–Uduaghan, a Senator representing Kogi Central. Akpoti–Uduaghan had a face-off during a Senate Plenary as a result of re – assignment of her seat, which degenerated into an uproarious plenary, culminating in her suspension.

The aftermath of the incident has further degenerated to multi–pronged societal malaises – protests and counter-protests; callous and pernicious propagation and extenuation of falsehood and subversive propaganda; deliberate obfuscating of gullible and docile citizens; seeding of hatred and odium across ethnic nationalities; widening of ethnic consciousness; among other anti-social ills, which Akpabio as a person naturally loathe and detest ad nauseam.

Recall that ab initio, Akpabio remained reticent and unflappable over the manner in which his character and reputation was callously and abrasively mauled through cheap blackmail and unsubstantiated and spurious allegations by mischief makers and half-witted political rivalries.

But he suddenly became deeply perturbed as it has become an open secret that a surrogate and infinitesimal group of smart alecs, political turn – coats and goof – offs have risen from their cesspit of doom to scuttle, undermine, demean and ultimately pull down the democratic ecosystem of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Evidence of foreign collaborations with these haters of democracy are rife. They have infiltrated all the tiers of the nation’s governance structure to ferment political umbrage and societal impasses, aimed at bringing the 10th Senate to its knees.

The presidency is not immune. It has equally been enmeshed with potpourri of acerbic, caustic and ferocious attacks, all in a bid to pull down the democratic structure of Nigeria.

Admittedly, the nation is passing through very difficult and challenging moments in all fronts.

High cost of living standards; hunger; unemployment; epileptic power supply; acute poverty; among other development challenges are hitting hard on the citizens.

These aforementioned intractable challenges are the top priorities of the government.

Efforts towards addressing them as on their top gear. Any attempt to distract the government from focusing maximally on the ways, policies and programmes aimed at ameliorating these anomalies and teething problems are grossly diversionary, frivolous, wicked, deceitful and unproductive.

A reminiscence of the previous political impasses and how the nation’s democratic settings were truncated should suffice to this argument put forward hereto.

Conscious and concerted efforts should at this time be made to avoid a recrudescence of the First and Second Republics.

Across the world, the Parliament is an integral part of democracy. It is often referred to as nexus that connects other arms of government. Any government across the world is called democratic because of the existence of the parliament.

Without a virile, vibrant and active legislature, democracy is a mockery of itself. The legislature in Nigeria has the power of the pulse and also the power of oversight and control over the other two arms.

At this juncture, Nigerians should adjust their political optics and see through the political prism. They should be able to adumbrate a grand sinister ploy targeted against the nation’s burgeoning democracy. Nigerians should shun, ignore, treat with disdain those who want to exploit some negligible lacuna in the Red Chamber and focus on issues that bring unity, mutual understanding and respect, which Akpabio himself epitomizes at a superlative level.

Those behind the internecine struggles in the various tiers of the nation’s governance should be shunned in a critical moment like this.

A basic incontrovertible fact remains in situ: the sublime rise to political stardom and the intimidating political credentials of Akpabio is increasingly becoming a cause for worry to some rival opponents who feel insecured because of their own paralytic leadership deficiencies.

They have consequently, resorted to all manner of promoting falsehood to the detriment of the nation’s corporate image. Nigerians should forthwith shun the whimsical manipulations and insidious antics of the morally emaciated political gadflies and busy bodies who would keep on yelling about the Natasha vs Akpabio debacle ad infinitum.

Their unholy actions smack of brute ignorance; gross loss of essence; naiveness and sheer loss of cerebral acuity as they continue to clamour for Akpabio’s resignation.

The yell, hollo and razz for Akpabio’s resignation is not borne out of patriotism on the part of the promoters, but a deliberate ploy with a sinister motive to rip Nigeria off its democratic status.

In my Igbo dialect, there is one adage that says “If you see a little pretty bird dancing by the side of the road, those that are drumming and singing for it are firmly inside the bush”.If the nation’s political space could be jolted following reports of spurious, unsubstantiated and bogus claims and allegations, then a fortiriori, more and uncontrollable ugly scenarios could as well befall the entire polity if not well – checkmated.

For a better society
