The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old suspected armed robber, Chima Ogumba, during an intelligence-led operation in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect was apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, on the morning of Monday, August 17, 2026, along Nkpor Road, where the police also recovered one pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges from him.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the operatives stormed the identified area following intelligence and conducted a search on the suspect.
The search reportedly led to the recovery of the firearm and ammunition, while the suspect was unable to provide what the police described as a satisfactory and reasonable explanation for his possession of the weapons.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, has consequently directed that the suspect be subjected to thorough investigation to establish his possible involvement in armed robbery and other criminal activities.
The investigation is also expected to determine the source of the recovered firearm and ammunition as well as their intended use.
The CP reiterated the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led operations, proactive policing, targeted patrols and sustained tactical interventions aimed at identifying, disrupting and dismantling criminal networks across the state.
The Command said the latest arrest underscored its determination to strengthen security operations and prevent criminal elements from using Anambra as a base for violent activities.
SP Ikenga urged residents to continue providing credible and timely information to the police, stressing that community cooperation remains vital to the success of intelligence-driven policing.
