ASTUA targets permanent town hall as membership surges to 55 communities

The Abia State Town Unions Association (ASTUA), Lagos State, is mobilising resources for the construction of a permanent Town Hall and headquarters that will serve as a central home for Abians in Lagos.

President-General of the association, Mazi Chuks Nwosu, disclosed this in an interview, describing the project as a lasting symbol of unity and identity for Ndi Abia resident in the state.

“The proposed Town Hall belongs to all of us. It is an investment in our collective future and will benefit both present and future generations of Abians in Lagos,” Nwosu said. He appealed to sons and daughters of Abia State in Lagos to attend the forthcoming fundraising event in large numbers and contribute generously, stressing that no donation is too small.

Nwosu, who hails from Umuiku-Ozar Asa in Ukwa West Local Government Area, noted that the association has recorded remarkable growth since he assumed office earlier this year. From only 23 registered and active communities at the time he took over, ASTUA now has 55 communities that are fully registered and financially up-to-date.

He attributed the progress to intensified engagement with member unions, improved transparency and accountability, stronger partnerships, and initiatives designed to boost participation.

ASTUA is the apex socio-cultural body representing recognised Abia town unions and community associations across the 17 local government areas of Abia State. It was established after the creation of Abia State from the old Imo State to provide a common platform for unity, cooperation, and collective advancement of Abians living in Lagos.

Its core objectives include promoting Abia culture and identity, fostering peace and brotherhood, supporting the development of Abia State, empowering youths and women, and building a befitting Abia House in Lagos.

Nwosu listed inadequate funding, low participation from some members, and rising project costs as major challenges. He said the leadership has been addressing these through greater engagement and accountability measures.

The fundraising event is expected to attract traditional rulers, political office holders, business leaders, and prominent Abia indigenes. The Royal Father of the Day is His Eminence, Engr. Dr. Eberechukwu Kanu Oji, Eze Aro IX of Arochukwu Kingdom.

On governance in Abia State, Nwosu observed that Governor Alex Otti’s administration has drawn attention for its focus on infrastructure, public sector reforms, and efforts to improve living standards. He maintained that the decision on a second term rests solely with the people of Abia State, who should judge leaders by performance, integrity, and measurable results.

He urged politicians to run peaceful and issue-based campaigns centred on ideas and solutions rather than personal attacks or violence. To Nigerians, he advised voting with conscience, prioritising character, competence, and track record over ethnicity, religion, or financial inducement.

Nwosu, a media and management consultant, community leader, businessman and marketplace evangelist, reaffirmed ASTUA’s commitment to the welfare, unity and progress of Ndi Abia in Lagos and beyond.
