The student-medalists will now pay 50 per cent of their school fees.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Clement Adebooye, made the announcement while receiving the representatives of the University at the just concluded WAUG and members of Sport Writer Association Of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State chapter, on Friday.

Adebooye stated that the athletes who did not win medals would pay 60 per cent of their school fees, as part of the institution’s effort to recognise and encourage students participating in sports.

Eighteen athletes represented UNIOSUN at the competition, winning a total of 16 medals, comprising six silver and 10 bronze medals.

The athletes competed in various sporting events, including taekwondo, track and field, javelin, lawn tennis and chess.

He noted that the tuition concession is expected to encourage student-athletes to combine academic pursuits with sporting excellence while motivating them to represent the university in future competitions.

He said, “When I look back, I have many reasons to be grateful, many people of my age couldn’t sleep the way I sleep. The wonderful achievements of the University is enough for me to be happy.

“On behalf of the school management, we will offer a discount to the representatives of the University at the WAGU, those who won medal for the university will only pay 50% of there school fee, while those who didn’t win medals will only pay 60%.”

Adebooye further disclosed that the University is working towards providing similar sporting facilities available at the main campus to other satellite campuses.

Earlier, the Acting Director of Sports, Dr. Tesleem Kolawole, lauded the Vice Chancellor for his unwavering support for sporting activities.

He noted that the VC has consistently approved sports programmes and fulfilled his promise of delivering a befitting sports complex for the University.

He stressed that the new stadium made camping easy and comfortable for both coaches and athletes ahead of the games.

He said, “we must thank the VC for always supporting the sporting activities in the school, when we went to him to seek approval for the West African University Games, he immediately gave approval and supported us with everything we needed.”

Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman of Osun SWAN, Oluwaseun Omolola, eulogised the large heart of the sports-loving Vice Chancellor, describing the University Stadium Complex as a standout project among higher institutions in Nigeria, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

He charged the University not to rest on his oars and assured that SWAN is ready to partner with the University community in projecting its sporting achievements.
