Tragedy struck in Lagos early hours of yesterday morning as many occupants were trapped in a three-storey building housing a local restaurant known as “Equal Right” collapsed at 10 Oremeta Street, Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos State.
The cause of the collapsed building is yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
Although, emergency responders could not confirm if there were casualties but search and rescue operation was still ongoing.
However, eight survivors were rescued and rushed to the nearby hospital for treatment.
In a statement signed by Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA
Emergency response teams and local residents have since launched search and rescue efforts, attempting to pull survivors from the rubble.
The statement partly read, “Following distress alerts at 09:45hrs, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans from Command and Control Centre, Alausa and Onipanu.
“Upon arrival of Agency’s Response Teams at the incident scene by 09:52hrs, it was discovered that a 3-storey building housing a Restaurant and Bar had collapsed, with several victims trapped under the debris at the aforementioned location.
“Eight victims has been rescued so far. One of the rescued victims attended by the LASEMA Pre-Hospital Care Unit has been transported to the hospital for further medical attention.”
It added, “No deaths has been recorded so far from the incident as the time of writing this report.
LASEMA Response Teams commenced search and rescue efforts immediately on arrival. Safety measures were activated with the operational area cordoned-off at the incident scene.
The Agency`s Heavy-duty equipment, ‘the escavator’, has been activated and deployed to aid in the quick rescue of victims that may still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure
In attendance, LASEMA Response Team (LRT) from Command and Control Centre, Alausa, LASEMA Response Team (LRT) from Onipanu, Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service among others.
