2027: Nigerians should interrogate records, policies not slogans

As campaigns for the 2027 presidential election officially commenced, the Peter Obi Media Office has presented the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi to Nigerians as the “candidate of conscience,” urging voters to critically assess the records, character and policy proposals of all contenders.

In a statement signed by the media office’s spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, on Wednesday, the group said the 150-day campaign period leading to the January 16, 2027 presidential election would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to determine the kind of leadership and country they desire.

The statement described Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, as a political figure whose public identity has been associated with prudence, fiscal responsibility, accountability and discipline.

According to the media office, Obi’s campaign will focus on transforming Nigeria “from consumption to production,” reducing the cost of governance, strengthening education and healthcare, improving national security and creating opportunities for young Nigerians.

It said the coming campaign should not be reduced to rallies and political slogans, but should enable Nigerians to interrogate the records and policy positions of presidential candidates.

“For us in the Peter Obi Media Office, these 150 days are crucial because they mark a journey that will culminate on January 16, 2027, when Nigerians decide not only who becomes president but also what kind of nation Nigeria will evolve into,” the statement said.

The media office framed the election as a contest between what it described as the “old habits of waste, division and broken promises” and a new vision centred on competence, accountability, productivity and hope.

It further said Obi was seeking support beyond ethnic, religious and regional considerations, insisting that his candidacy should be judged on his record, ideas and character.

“Peter Obi enters this campaign not as a champion of one tribe, one religion, or one region but as a Nigerian seeking judgement based on his record, ideas, and vision,” it said.

The statement recalled Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State, during which he presented himself as a prudent manager of public resources and emphasised investments in education, healthcare and infrastructure.

The media office said Obi’s central argument was that governance should be treated as a responsibility to citizens rather than an avenue for political privilege or personal enrichment.

It urged Nigerians to subject every campaign promise, manifesto, speech and debate to scrutiny, particularly on issues including insecurity, unemployment, economic hardship, corruption and institutional decay.

“Democracy is strongest when citizens make informed choices based on facts rather than fear or primordial sentiment,” the statement added.

The media office also said Obi would not ask Nigerians to vote for him because of his ethnicity, religion or political connections, but would seek their mandate on the basis of what it described as competence, capacity, character, compassion and commitment.

As the presidential campaign officially gets underway, the statement called on Nigerians to decide which candidate possesses the capacity to build a secure, prosperous, united and accountable nation.

It concluded with a direct appeal to Nigerians to listen to Obi and judge his candidacy alongside those of his opponents.

“We present to you the man who is willing and prepared to reset our country for a journey to greatness. He is Peter (Okwute) Gregory Obi. Listen to him,” the statement said.
