Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to rein in his supporters, accusing them of carrying out sustained attacks on supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate Peter Obi on social media.
Yesufu made the appeal in a post on her verified X account on Tuesday evening, warning that internal hostilities among opposition groups could undermine efforts to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2027.
“An appeal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to call his supporters to order. They have been on a rampage on social media attacking supporters of Mr Peter Obi. I have been one of their targets,” she wrote.
The activist said she expected greater political restraint, noting that she and Atiku had previously operated within the same political platform.
She urged opposition supporters to focus on a united campaign against President Bola Tinubu instead of attacking one another as preparations for the 2027 general election intensify.
Yesufu’s intervention highlights the growing rivalry between supporters of Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and those of Obi, who is leading the NDC, despite both camps positioning themselves as alternatives to the APC.
The activist has remained one of Obi’s most prominent backers since the 2023 election and has continued to mobilise support for him ahead of 2027.
Political observers note that disagreements over candidates, alliances and electoral strategy are increasingly playing out in public and on social media as opposition parties step up preparations for the next presidential contest.
Yesufu argued that energy spent on attacking fellow opposition supporters would be better channelled toward defeating the ruling party.
