The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State Chapter, has condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the revelation that artificial intelligence (AI) generated photographs have found their way into the preliminary register of voters.
This was contained in a release by the State Publicity Secretary, Dr. Christopher Odianarewo, demanding a forensic audit of the entire INEC voter database, supervised by credible civil society organizations and technical experts.
The party wrote: “The shocking confession by INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, Dr. Lawrence Bayode, on Friday 30/10/2026, during an appearance on Arise Television, admitting that compromised registration officers used their official access to inject ghost data, AI-generated images, and monumental irregularities into the nation’s database, is not just an administrative lapse; it is a grave national security threat and a deliberate assault on the democratic rights of Nigerians.
“For a supposedly independent electoral umpire to casually admit on national television that “bad registration” and fictional, machine-created faces were smuggled into the voter register under its watch is the height of institutional incompetence. How are we to trust an electoral body that literally allowed phantom voters to be manufactured using artificial intelligence?
“What is even more disgraceful and unacceptable is the helpless confession by the same ICT Director stating, “We know what they did. We know how they did it. But honestly, I don’t know why.” What an abysmal display of cluelessness! INEC is paid with taxpayers’ money to secure the sanctity of our ballots, not to act as a bewildered spectator in a grand heist of the people’s mandate.
“This monumental failure vindicates our long-standing position that INEC, under its current leadership, has been thoroughly compromised and lacks the technical competence, moral authority, and institutional integrity to conduct free, fair, and credible elections in Lagos State and across Nigeria.
“The infiltration of the voter register with AI-generated photos is a clear rehearsal for rigging. It confirms fears that clandestine forces are desperately attempting to populate the voter roll with non existent entities to subvert the will of the electorate “
Odianarewo asked, “Where is the internal security and backend monitoring of INEC’s database if field officers can whimsically upload AI-generated images without immediate system rejection?
” Why is INEC hiding behind pedestrian excuses of “pressure to complete within 90 days” to justify systemic fraud?”
Continuing, he stated, “Beyond empty promises of a ‘data cleanup,” what punitive, legal, and criminal measures are being taken against these compromised registration officers who have sabotaged our electoral process?
“Lagosians and Nigerians at large can no longer afford to treat INEC’s perennial incompetence with kid gloves. Every compromised register is an attack on the votes of millions of citizens who queue under the sun to exercise their franchise.
“The Lagos State PDP demands a comprehensive, transparent, and independent forensic audit of the entire INEC voter database, supervised by credible civil society organizations and technical experts, before any final register is certified. INEC must immediately publish the names of the rogue officers involved, prosecute them transparently, and purge the database of all anomalies.
“If INEC can not guarantee a clean, uncompromised, and verifiable voter register, it should honourably admit its failure and step aside. We will resist any attempt by any institution to deploy artificial intelligence or any other underhanded method to rig the collective mandate of the Nigerian people.
“The world is watching, and the resilience of the Nigerian electorate will ultimately triumph over institutional sabotage.”
For a better society
