The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has harped on the pivotal role of digital birth and national identification number (NIN) registration on Nigeria’s progress.
This is as the NIMC declared its collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) on digital birth registration.
Abisoye Coker-Odusote, NIMC director-general (DG) and chief executive officer (CEO), who spoke at the launch of the renewed hope initiative project, said the registration will give citizens access to basic needs.
According to a statement issued on Friday by Kayode Adegoke, head of corporate communications at NIMC, Coker-Odusote noted that the importance of birth registration and the national identification number (NIN) to foster development in Nigeria.
She said birth registration is a fundamental right and a key component of the nation’s developmental plans.
“Birth registration is not only important for the individual; it is also crucial for the development of the nation.
“Digital birth and NIN registration will scale up access to government education, health care and other social benefits not only of the child but to all Nigerians,” Coker-Odusote said.
The NIMC DG commended NPC for accelerating and digitalising birth registration, assuring that NIMC will continue to be a veritable partner in spearheading the country’s social and educational re-engineering.
She called for the support of civil society and international partners for the success of the initiative, adding that NIMC would continue to provide seamless NIN registration for Nigerians, most especially children below the age of 16 years.
Coker-Odusote also thanked Oluremi Tinubu, the first lady, for her steadfast support towards the success of the NIN and birth registration.
