The coordinator of fistula foundation, (VVF) centre, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Associate professor Sunday Lengmang stated that the centre is intended to eradicate dangerous fistula disease ravaging women on the Plateau in near future.
Lengmang said with the grant the center got in this year 2022 to 2023, “the new grant we have will start from the first of April 2022 and last to 31st of March 2023.
“We intend to have closer work with Government and all the 17 Local Governments in Plateau State with their primary healthcare leaders and also with primary healthcare clinics at different communities in Local Government Areas so that we can be able to reach out to the communities most closely so that we can able to get the patients as soon as possible salvage them from divorced.”
The VVF centre coordinator Lengmang made the remarks on Saturday during 30th annual VVF reunion anniversary celebration in Jos the state capital.
According to him, “at 30th anniversary we have come a long way and 30 is the gold, we have just few patients. At the first reunion we have just less than hundred women but now we have about three hundred women attending and then were been able to do all ranging of surgeries and right now we do not only take care of simple VVF but we take care of very complex VVF.
“We now provide surgeries for patients that have incurable vesico-vaginal fistula. We have now developed newer strategies and techniques in surgery that would be able to take care of most of the patients. We now provide all kinds of vaginal surgeries for the women that have blockage of vagina as a result of complications.
“We are the only center that now provide the sigmoid vagina surgery for such category of patients. As a result we have referral all over the country and even outside the country. We have our donors that are supporting all the works that we have been doing here in Jos that is the (fistula foundation).
Lengmang further explained that there are numerous causes of vesico-vaginal fistula but the major one is the prolonged obstructed labor.
“The vesico-vaginal fistula or female gentile fistula in general is mainly cause by prolonged obstructed labor. Usually labor is supposed to last not more than a day but in some cases this women labor for two days, three days and even more. That causes blockage of the blood supplier as a result of the head being imparted between the pelvic bone.
“So that blocks the blood supply and lead to destroy of the tissue that is being intervene, in front we have the blader, utary that lead to the leakage of urine which is for VVF and behind we have the
rep tune and when the whole develop pieces that is the main cause for 80-90 percent causes of fistula”, he mentioned.
The 30th annual VVF reunion anniversary celebration brought together women both within and outside Plateau.
Among those who shed testimonies after admission, got treatment as well as healed was Mrs. Lot Dorcas Kafa. According to her, ” I suffered prejudice because of the condition I found myself. I am ashamed whenever meet with people.But to the glory of God when I came to VVF centre here in Jos having received treatment for what I am passing through I got healing. I want to use this medium to appreciate God, the management of VVF and encourage other women to always have faith in God.
In her part Mrs. Tabitha Monday said this is the fifth time she undergoes surgery until now that God decided to answer her prayers and bring the situation to an end.
Esther Ishaya who her husband divorced her a result of VVF, also confirmed that she went through various of surgeries about forth to get cure from the disease, ” noting that even though I lost my marriage but I remain grateful to God for healing me….”
Earlier, the chief medical director (CMD) Bingham University Teaching, professor Stephen Anzaku has applauded Lengmang and his team for paying adequate attention to the patients as he encourage them to maintain the tempo.
Dr.Ene George who is one of the VVF centre international partner pledge their continue partnership with the management to overcome the dangerous fistula disease that have caused a lot of uncertainty for women and their household.
