Stakeholders Call For Revised Curricular To Enhance General Nursing, Midwifery

Stakeholders in the health sector has expressed optimism that the revised general Nursing and Midwifery curricula when finally operational, would lead to improved health indicators in Nigeria.

This is as the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in collaboration with USAID Health Workforce Management Activity, revised the General Nursing and Midwifery curricula towards enhancing efficiency in healthcare delivery in the country.

They gave this optimism at the opening ceremony of a Three Day Zonal Orientation Workshop aimed at familiarizing the Nurse and Midwife Educators with the revised curricular yesterday in Abuja.

The Director/Head Department of Hospital Service Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Adebimpe Adebiyi, said the revised curriculum of the Nursing and Midwifery will help address the issue of brain drain and other challenges in the health sector.

She added that there would be an improvement in their skills and will also be abreast with the global best practices to help them perform their duties seamlessly.

Also speaking at the event, the Secretary-General and Registrar of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr Farouk Umar Abubakar, called on all Nurses and Midwives as well as educators to accept the new curriculum in order to improve the quality of healthcare delivery at all levels.

however, he enjoined to employ the nursing indicator to take this as a challenge to critically analyze and provide a uniform direction for the purpose of providing qualitative and competent professional Nurses that will equally handle our healthcare system at all levels both tertiary, secondary and primary levels.

Board Chairman of NMCN, Dr Abosede Bola Ofi said the revision of the curriculum will lead to the unification of materials and methods for teaching nurses and midwives towards achieving best practices.

While adding that there is content that should be in the curriculum.

Meanwhile, the representative of USAID Office Nigeria, Mr Emmanuel Ogwuche, assured of his office’s support towards the implementation of the new curricular.

On his part, the Country Director, USAID Health Workforce Management Activity, Dr Andy Omoluabi, spoke on the implication of reviewing the Curricular.

He added that access to electronic resources is a challenge and what we did was to activate the electronic library which will be made available to students and tutors on the training Institutions that we work with.
