As Nigerian Muslims join their counterparts all over the world to commence this year’s Ramadan fast, a former commissioner for public transportation in Lagos State, Chief Lanre Razak, has enjoined the Islamic faithful to be law abiding and be more prayerful for divine intervention in defeating the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
Razak , who is also the Balogun-General of Epe, made the plea in his message on the commencement of this year’s Ramadan fast which will last 29 or 30 days.
According to him, this year’s Ramadan period specially needs fervent prayers by the Muslim Ummah for enduring peace, security, political stability, economic recovery of the nation following the devastating consequences of the Coronavirus on the world economy.
He said while Nigeria and the global community are going through the biting effects of economic disruption as a result of COVID -19, more prayers are needed in this fast period for divine intervention.
Reminding Muslims that fasting in Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, Razak , said it is also contained in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 verse 183, which says: “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you so that you may take heed or guide against evil”.
He, therefore, urged Muslims and other Nigerians to shun anything evil and obey the constituted authorities especially the restrictions imposed on movement in Lagos, Ogun and other states as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja as part of measures to contain the spread of the deadly virus.
Razak, who is also a member of Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos State, said during this month of peace and forgiveness of sins, “Muslims and other Nigerians should pray ceaselessly to Almighty Allah to let us come victorious of this Coronavirus ravaging the whole world and which has disrupted the socio-economic activities of the entire globe”.
He said: “Since this year’s Ramadan fast is coming at a time the whole world is sober and lost over 100,000 people to COVID-19, we should pray to the Almighty Allah for us to bounce back and should use this period of lockdown to be our brother’s keeper which is one of the lessons of Ramadan.
“Also, since this holy month is that of mercy, we should extend the hands of fellowship to our neighbours especially the vulnerable ones among us to complement both the state and federal government’s palliatives to cushion the harsh effects of this lockdown in the country.
“As we commence this year’s Ramadan fasting for 29 or 30 days, we should use the opportunity to pray for the nation, the President, Governors, other political office holders and those in leadership positions for Allah’s guidance and good health”, he stated.
Razak commended the Lagos State government’s efforts in containing the pandemic so far and for the palliatives distributed to the people especially vulnerable members of the public, who have been directed to stay at home.
While appealing to members of the public to comply fully with guidelines of public health experts and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC on how to prevent the disease and stay safe, he assured Lagosians that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu would continue to embark on developmental programmes that will better their lot.
