BLESSING AKOROWOSI, Osogbo

Osun State Police Command has identified, arrested and detained the police officer, Sergeant Moses Samuel who shot dead a truck driver, Mallam Kabiru Babai on Friday at Ota-efun area in Osogbo, Osun State.

According to a release by the State Command’s Spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, investigation and disciplinary actions have commenced and the suspect will be arraigned in court after completion of the Orderly Room Trial, which will serve as deterrent to other officers.

While the Commissioner of Police, CP Olawale Olokode expressed his condolences to the victim’s family, colleagues at work, and friends, he assured that justice will be served.

The deceased, a 33-year-old borehole drilling truck driver was brutalised  before he was shot dead by the officer.

It was learnt that the deceased drove a Shekeena Global borehole drilling truck which broke down along Ikirun road on Friday morning. This, he was trying to fix alongside his crew when the police officers arrived.

The police officers, who arrived in a mini commercial bus, popularly known as Korope, dragged the driver from under the truck and beat him before shooting him.

It was also learnt that the deceased left a pregnant wife and a little child behind.

The State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola condemned the killing of the unarmed truck driver by the policeman.

He called for investigation of the circumstances leading to the event and charged the Commissioner of Police to produce the alleged killer and make him face the full wrath of the law.

This was contained in a statement by his Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan on Saturday.

While commending the youths of the area for not taking the laws into their own hands, Oyetola assured that the government would ensure justice is done.

He sympathised with the family of the deceased, his employers and friends, saying that as a government, “we are resolved to do everything possible to protect citizens from actual and potential threats.”
