Nigerian governor shuts down Shoprite

The Ondo State Government has closed Shoprite Supermarket and a neighbourhood market in Akure The Ondo State Waste Management Authority (ODSWMA) sealed Shoprite and other popular facilities on Monday, according to this online news platform, for what it described as “unhygienic practices.”

The government’s action is thought to be motivated by violations of Ondo state’s environmental laws.

The Authority’s General Manager, Mrs Ayo Adeyemo, who made the announcement, said the owners of the affected facilities had broken environmental laws and failed to follow hygienic guidelines.

Adeyemo, who insisted that more sanctions would be imposed, warned that anyone found guilty would not escape punishment.
