NECA Economic Summit : Experts identity poor leadership,corruption,poverty as impediments to economic growth

Economic experts have identified poor leadership,poverty and corruption as major pitfalls of the Government’s macro economic polices. They also identified inequality and bad politics as challenges confronting the nation, which call for urgent attention.
Experts drawn mainly from the  private sector, who gathered during the National Economic Dialogue organized by Nigeria Employers Cosultative Association (NECA),yesterday in Lagos,agreed that for the country to experience growth, it must raise competent leaders to tackle corruption and put in place, investment friendly polices.
Various speakers at the forum which had as theme, “Promotion of a Novel Approach to Policy Design,Implementation and Mentoring in 2023″, also stressed that as the country prepares for general elections in 2023, there was need for selfless and competent leaders who will profer solutions to the high level of corruption and poverty ravaging the land.
The stakeholders also called on NECA to build institutional capacity and sponsor a law to institutionalize the Organized Private Sector (OPS) and make it a voice in government.
The keynote Speaker,distinguished Professor of Economics at Lagos Business School,Prof Bongo Ali said the high level of poverty and inequality in the country was mind-boggling.He argued that no country can transit from poverty without diversification and with the high level of
corruption,it will be difficult for the nation to eradicate poverty.
Prof Adi, who spoke on the topic: “Rethinking Developmental State Paradigm”,
noted that the challenges facing the country are not about policies but how to grow institutional capacities to pursue policies.
He observed that though Nigeria is privileged to have natural endowments,the resources are not commensurate with development.
At the panelist session,the Chief Executi ve Officer(CEO),Center for the Promotion of Private Enterprises (CPPE),Dr Muda Yusuf,stressed that the in-coming adminstration in 2023,must appoint people with good quality to drive the affairs of government. He said with stringent punishment in place and the next adminstration developing the political will,the country would be rid of corruption.
“Corruption thrives in a society where there are no consequences for such action.
Policies also make it thrive.We must have a system that prevents corruption,not the one that changes currency when the money has been stolen”,Dr Yussuf added.
Speaking also,the Managing Director of BusinessDay Media Limited,Dr Ogho Okiti decried the impact of slow policy and bad politics on the  country.
“We have been on the issue of whether to remove fuel subsidies over the years and nothing is done till now. Policy adjustment is slow because our politics is not right”,Okiti said.
On his part,Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader,PwC,Taiwo Oyedele, advocated for data-driven policies,inclusive approach and coordination to solve the country’s myriad of economic challenges.
He appealed to NECA to build institutional capacity and strengthen capacity advocacy for the private sector to have voice on economic decisions within government.
The Director-General of NECA Adewale Smith Oyerinde assured that a policy document would be put in place for effective advocacy to guide the in-coming administration.
