NASS, IGP agree to set up Technical Committee on Police Colleges , Training Institutions

A joint Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Police Affairs and the Inspector-General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba on Wednesday agreed to set up separate technical committees to harmonize and fine-tune their positions on training and retraining of Police personnel at Police colleges and other training institutions.

This happened at a public hearing organized by the joint committee on ‘A Bill for an Act to Establish Transmission of the Nigeria Police Force College, Training School and Institutions (Establishment, E T C) Bill 2023’ at the House of Representatives New Wing National Assembly Abuja

Speaker of the House Hon Femi Gbajabiamila represented by Hon.Iduma Igariwey (Ebonyi, PDP) said that there is a need for a legal framework to restructure the training institutions of the Nigeria Police Force nationwide.

He also said that the proposal to reform the training institutions of the lead internal security agency in Nigeria lead to increased funding of the Police Force.

Also in his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba said that the bill is intended to provide a specialized form of training for Police personnel of all ranks from the Police Colleges and other training institutions.

He also stated that the need for training and retraining of Police officers in the various areas of policing for the security of the nation cannot be overemphasized.

In their separate speeches at the event Chairmen of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs Sen Dauda Haliru Jika and Hon, Usman Bello Kumo harped on the need for a properly trained Police Force for the security of the lives and properties of the citizenry.

They all agreed to set up a technical committee of both chambers of the National Assembly to harmonize their positions on the bill for ease of passage of the proposed legislation into law.

Some of the colleges and institutions captured in the executive bill drafted and forwarded by the Presidency to the National Assembly include Police Training Colleges in Oji River Enugu, Jos, Ikeja, Maiduguri, Ondo and Tai Rivers State among other training institutions of the  Nigeria Police Force.
