Health officials prevent consumers from buying dead cow in Ondo

Vigilant Environmental officials in Akoko Northwest local government area of Ondo state on Thursday prevented unsuspected consumers from buying a dead cow in the markets.

This followed a tip-off received by the team of health officials from Akoko Northwest local government area led by its Director of Environmental Services, Mrs. Yemisi Adeniyi.

The health officials swooped into action and went to Ajowa-Akoko where the herdsmen who wanted to sell the dead cow had perfected plans to distribute the cow.

Mrs Adeniyi told them that the dead cow is not fit for human consumption because it has become contaminated meat that no one can determine the source of its death

She, therefore, warned people of the area particularly the butchers to always make sure that cows are inspected and certified healthy for consumption before slaughtering and send to the markets.

The Director viewed the offence as a very serious one especially now that the country is battling with COVID-19 and Delta Varian.

The cow was retrieved from them and the burial was supervised by environmental officers.

It would be recalled that last year at Ikare-Akoko Northeast local government, 20 cows died mysteriously and the owners sold to butchers at give-away prices.

The case went to court where the butchers who sold the contaminated meat were reminded in prison custody.

A similar thing happened at Akungba last year when about 10 cows died and they were given mass burial by health officials.
