GLO-Powered AFRICAN VOICES profiles Nigerian change maker, Onakoya

African Voices Changemakers, Globacom-sponsored programme on CNN International will this week highlight the achievements of two chess masters who have mentored several youth in the game.

Nigeria’s Tunde Onakoya, founder of a chess club known as ‘Chess in Slums Africa’ and Kenya’s James Kang’aru Mwangi, will be on the 30-minute programme to talk about their passion for the board game and how this has translated into the mentorship of hundreds of young chess players.

Onakoya’s chess club was instituted to empower youth in impoverished communities. The club espouses the belief that every child has the capacity for greatness regardless of his or her background and has successfully trained over 200 children and secured juicy scholarships for 20 of such mentees.

Mwangi’s huge repute as a prodigious chess master led to his induction into the prestigious ‘Forbes Africa 30 under 30 for 2021‘. The 28-year-old graduate of the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) and CEO of Epitome School of Chess is the first chess player ever on the African continent to clinch the Forbes award.

African Voices Changemakers will be broadcast this Saturday at 9.30 a.m. on DSTV channel 401 and on Sunday at 4.30 a.m., 7.30 a.m., 12.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. Another repeat will be aired on Monday at 4.00 a.m. while a two-part, 15-minute rebroadcast will hold on Tuesday and Wednesday at 6.45 p.m.
