From Victor Duruamaku Owerri
Jubilation and happiness filled the air in Owerri Imo State capital, following the pronouncement by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) to suspend their seven months strike action
It could be recalled that the Academic Union embarked on the strike in February 2022
However, the students who got so frustrated by the strike, expressed joy and happiness that the Union has finally seen reason to call off the strike
A group of from the various universities in the state, particularly students of the Federal University of Technology Owerri and Imo State University (IMSU) Owerri commended the decision of the Academic Union to end the strike
Speaking to journalists in Owerri one of the students, a 400 level student of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Mr Stanley Ejiofor noted that with the suspension of the strike, many of the students who were about completing their programmes before the strike commenced will now complete their programmes
Ejiofor further said that the strike which lasted for over seven months slowed down the progress of the country by pulling back majority of the students who should have been engaged in one meaning venture or the other
In his own opinion, another student, Miss Maureen Ibekwe also a final year student medical student of Imo state University (IMSU) Owerri, prayed that the Union and the Federal Government does not in to this type of disagreement again
Maureen Ibekwe noted that the seven months old strike not only pull the Academic development and calendar of the students back but also destroyed education in the country
She advised policy makers and other stakeholders particularly, states and National Assemblies to put a legislation in place to henceforth forbid top Government officials, presidents of the country and his vise, ministers and other top civil servants from sending their children and wards outside the country for educational purposes
” this measure, will help to checkmate in future relationship between the Federal Government and the Union” she added
The students however urged the managements of the various universities to repackage their programmes to help the students complete their programmes
