ELIZABETH VINCENT, Yenagoa
Oil and gas firm, Renaissance Africa energy company limited, has eulogised the late deputy governor of Bayelsa state, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, describing him as a strong pillar of support who ensured a cordial working relationship between the company and the state government.
The company’s vice president, relations and sustainable development, Dr. Igo Weli, made this known on monday when he led a management team on a condolence visit to Governor Douye Diri and the Ewhrudjakpo family at Government House, Yenagoa.
Dr. Weli said the company enjoyed immense support from the Bayelsa state government, attributing the smooth relationship to the effective leadership team put together by Governor Diri, in which the late deputy governor played a critical role.
He described Ewhrudjakpo as a dependable friend of the company who consistently stood in for the government in supporting its operations, adding that although he lived for 60 years, his achievements were profound and far-reaching.
“We have always said that we enjoy the best support as a company from the Bayelsa state government, your excellency has assembled an excellent team, and the departed deputy governor was a core member of that team weli said.
“It is not about how long one lives, but how well Ewhrudjakpo lived for 60 years, yet someone who lived twice that number of years may not be able to achieve what he accomplished.”
He also pledged the company’s support towards the funeral activities to ensure the late deputy governor is given a befitting farewell, renaissance africa energy company limited is an indigenous oil firm that recently acquired the assets of Shell petroleum development company (SPDC).
Responding, governor Douye Diri thanked the management of renaissance for the condolence visit, noting that Bayelsa state had lost not only a deputy governor but also a trusted friend, brother, and a key figure in the state’s governance structure.
The governor said Ewhrudjakpo’s impact and legacies would continue to speak for him, describing him as an integral part of the engine of government.
“Looking back at how we emerged as governor and deputy governor, we went through what I have always described as a wilderness experience,we stood by each other, prayed together, and fasted together, Diri said.
“That was one of the reasons I related with him differently not just as a deputy governor. Today he is no more, but that is life.”
The four-day obsequies for the late deputy governor of Bayelsa state will commence on tuesday, January 27, while his remains will be laid to rest on friday, January 30, at his hometown of Ofoni in Sagbama local government area of the state.
