The Inspector-General of Police IGP Olatunji Disu, has announced the hosting of a 3-day workshop for all Assistant Commissioners of Police to address the lingering insecurity in many parts of the Nigerian federation.
The IGP further directed all State Commissioners of Police to always ensure prompt review of all security operations targeted at addressing insecurity.
The Police boss spoke in a remark at the monthly strategic meeting of senior Police officers from the rank of Commissioners of Police and above, on Tuesday at the Goodluck Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He thanked the senior Police officers for the courage and resilience they continue to show, often in very difficult conditions, adding that did not go unnoticed.
According to him, Nigeria’s security environment remains demanding and the agency has recorded real successes in recent months.
He lamented that terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, cult-related violence, cybercrime and other organised criminal activity have continued to evolve and the force have to evolve faster than they do.
He said: “That means every strategic commander needs to sharpen intelligence gathering, strengthen surveillance, improve visibility policing and deepen collaboration with sister agencies. Every deployment should be guided by credible intelligence and a sound assessment of the threat, not habit or routine”.
The IGP further stated that it is not the number of operations we run that determines success; rather, it is the security outcomes those operations produce.
He pointed out that he expects every Commissioner of Police to build a command-specific strategy that reflects the realities on the ground in their state, while staying aligned with the national objectives.
He also directed the officers to ensure that every operation, successful or not, should be reviewed afterward so that the force leadership can capture what worked, fix what did not, and build those lessons into how we operate going forward.
He added that an institution that keeps learning is one that stays effective.
Speaking on the agency’s achievements, he said that since 9th June 2026, anti-crime operations across the federation have led to the arrest of 1,198 suspects for various offences.
He gave a breakdown of the successful operations as follows: 151 suspects for murder and culpable homicide, 117 for armed robbery, 151 for kidnapping, and 104 suspected cultists. A further 169 persons were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms.
He also hinted that Police operations also led to the rescue of 166 kidnap victims, adding that they recovered 166 assorted firearms and 1,475 rounds of ammunition of various calibres, along with 47 stolen vehicles.
The IGP also commended the officers for the successful rescue of the abducted students and teachers in Oyo State, saying that it deserves particular mention.
He said that the feat is a clear example of what the force can achieve when Nigeria’s security agencies work together with a genuine sense of common purpose.
He revealed that the rescue operation succeeded because of close collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, other security and intelligence agencies and members of the public who came forward with timely and credible information.
He commended every officer and operative who took part, saying that their professionalism and courage brought the victims home safely.
He also thanked and appreciated the members of the public whose information made that rescue possible.
