Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has begun the distribution of about 500 trucks of subsidized fertiliser commodity for farmers in the state to enhance agricultural yield and accelerate economic growth.
Daily Champion reports that the assorted fertilizer for distribution includes: NPK 15-15-15, NPK 17-13-13 and NPK Urea as the Plateau government pegs N20,000 per bag.
Speaking during the official flag-off of the distribution on Friday at Jos South Local Government secretariat, Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment and determination towards ensuring that Plateau is positioned for effective farming activities.
He said Nigeria is looking up to Plateau as the food basket of the nation.
Explaining the rationale behind the procurement of the fertiliser, the governor acknowledged that the state government collaborated with the 17 local government councils.
“We approved the reduction of fertiliser to N20,000, per bag with the intention and expectation of cushioning the negative effects farmers encountered last year’s 2025 farming season.
“It is our earnest desire that this year’s cropping season 2026, farmers will go to the farm and have a bumper harvest and in turn gain more”, Governor Mutfwang stated.
The governor further admits that plans are in top gear to provide chemicals to enable farmers deal with weeds and pesticides.
The Commissioner of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Samson Bugama, revealed that the ministry earlier proposed 250 trucks, but the governor graciously gave approval of 500 trucks of assorted fertilizer.
Bugama said there are 18 store centers designated for distribution across the state.
He noted that the distribution process is technological based which, according to him, “system is very robust and unique.”
He also confirmed that a lot of farmers who had registered had already received text messages to start collecting their fertilisers.
