Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion, Anambra State, on Thursday commenced its 4-day Second Session of the 33rd Synod at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government area, with a strong call on Christians and leaders to embrace the fear of God as the foundation of wisdom, leadership and a secure future.
Delivering the Synod sermon, a guest preacher, the Rt. Rev. Charles Kascan Asilutwa, Bishop of Maseno North Diocese of the Anglican Church of Kenya, lamented that humanity now lives in an age of vast knowledge with diminishing wisdom.
“We live in a high-knowledge age, but lack wisdom,” he declared, stressing that no individual, society or nation could successfully face the future without divine guidance.
According to him, “there is no future for man without God and His guidance.”
Speaking on the Synod theme, “The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Wisdom,” Bishop Asilutwa said wisdom remained indispensable for leadership, especially among ministers of God.
He urged Christians to acknowledge God’s sovereignty, serve Him wholeheartedly, and seek His direction in every aspect of life.
“The fear of God signifies humility before Him. We must respect Him, honour Him and look unto Him in times of need,” he said, warning that those who exclude God from their lives may suffer the consequences of spiritual emptiness and poor judgment.
The Kenyan bishop further challenged the clergy to serve God and humanity with humility, holiness, sincerity and selflessness, noting that genuine fear of God inspires hatred for evil and commitment to righteous living.
Earlier, the Bishop on the Niger, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo, accompanied by a colourful convoy of clergy, parishioners and diocesan officials, inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade at the Bishop’s Court, GRA, Onitsha, before proceeding to Nkpor.
Highlights on the opening ceremony included the official reception by the Nkpor community, the solemn blessing of the town and the ceremonial planting of the Synod Tree by Bishop Nwokolo.
