Magistrates in Anambra have urged the Federal Government to spread benefits for judicial servants across all sections, lamenting that they are undergoing poor condition of service and benefits in the country.
The magistrates stated this on Friday at a function in honour of His Lordship, Chief Magistrate Kenneth Nwoye of the Idemili Magisterial Division, who retired from active service in May 2026 at the Nnobi Court premises.
Speaking during the event which was jointly organized by magistrates, lawyers and some litigants in the Idemili Magisterial Division, Chairman of Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Anambra State Branch, Chief Magistrate Onome Okonkwo who lamented the alleged poor condition of service for Magistrates in the country, demanded a better condition of service and benefits be spread across sections, adding that magistrates perform enormous duty therefore should be given better condition of service and benefits.
“It is unfortunate that when magistrates retire, they are not celebrated but when a judge retires, a valedictory session is held for him. So, this is our own valedictory session,” he said.
Other speakers who spoke included Chief Magistrate Ifeoma Okonkwo, Dr Mike Anyadiegwu, Chief Justice C.K Anyabogu( Rtd), Barrister Joe Martins Uzodike, while lauding Nwoye for putting in meritorious service as Chief Magistrate, also urged the government to continue to strengthen the judiciary for effective service to humanity.
Chief Magistrate Nwoye thanked the attendees for the honour.
He advised lawyers and magistrates to continue to render selfless service to Nigerians in their positions by avoiding anything that would dent their image and ensure that justice brings peace between parties.
Also present on the occasion were former Nigeria Bar Association(NBA) Chairman, Anaocha, Anambra State Branch, Chief Jideofo Okongwu, Chief Akwaudene Chigbo Enendu, among other personalities.
