Police dismiss rumoured curfew in Ondo, warn against fake news

The Ondo State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating within Akure metropolis alleging the imposition of a traditional curfew, describing the claim as false and misleading.
The command said there was no such curfew in place and that no security situation currently warranted panic or apprehension among residents.
This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh.
According to the command, the rumour was being spread to create fear, confusion and unnecessary tension in the state.
“The command states categorically that no such curfew exists and there is no security development warranting panic or apprehension among residents,” the statement said.
Residents were therefore advised to disregard the information and continue their lawful activities without fear, while relying only on verified and credible sources of information.
The command warned individuals and groups involved in the spread of misinformation and fake news to desist, noting that such acts undermine public peace and security.
It added that anyone found culpable would be investigated and made to face the law.
The police statement comes a day after the Palace of the Deji of Akure Land reportedly issued a similar denial, rejecting the curfew slated for 9 pm.
Ondo State, like several parts of Southwest Nigeria, has faced heightened security challenges in recent months, including sporadic incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related violence.
The police, however, assured residents of its continued commitment to maintaining peace, public safety, and the protection of lives and property across the state.

For a better society
