EBENEZER ADUROKIYA, Warri
The Delta State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the public to disregard claims of a leadership vacuum following the Supreme Court’s recent judgment, insisting that Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed remains the valid national chairman of the party.
In a press release issued on 1st May 2026, the party’s publicity secretary, Chief Kingsley Akpos Oturubo, said the Supreme Court’s verdict delivered on 30th April 2026 had effectively resolved the factional crisis that had plagued the PDP.
He noted that the judgment nullified the Ibadan convention that produced the Aminu Turaki-led faction, thereby ending the party’s internal schism.
Addressing confusion over the status of Senator Sam Anyanwu, Mr Oturubo explained that the senator and three others were suspended for one month at the party’s 608th NWC meeting on 1st November 2025. That suspension elapsed on 1st December 2025 without being contested or extended.
He added that on 8th December 2025, Senator Anyanwu and his colleagues were appointed into a caretaker NWC, which later organised the March 2026 convention.
The current leadership produced by that convention, led by Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, has been recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he said, urging Deltans to verify the details on the INEC portal.
“Those parading themselves as the Board of Trustees of the Party are not known to us,” Mr Oturubo stated. “We have a properly and legally constituted National Executive Committee comprising the BoT led by His Excellency, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, and the NWC led by Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed.”
The PDP Delta chapter called on all aggrieved members to return to the party, adding that the PDP would contest and win all governorship, National Assembly and state assembly seats in the 2027 elections.
“Let us join hands together to rebuild the party,” the statement concluded. “Our members who left during the internecine leadership crisis are called upon once again to return to your original family.”
