The Delta State Police Command has arrested four suspects, recovered two illegal firearms and one live cartridge in a coordinated security sweep across Asaba, dealing a blow to armed robbery gangs operating in the state capital.
A fabricated Beretta pistol was seized on Wednesday afternoon when operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) intercepted a suspect along the busy Ugbolu/Asaba Road. The suspect, Chinoso Igwemma, aged 28, was taken into custody at the scene.
In a separate operation, officers from the Crack Squad on routine patrol in the Bonsaac Area stopped a tricycle carrying three male passengers. A thorough search yielded one locally made cut-to-size pistol, which was found loaded with one live cartridge.
The three occupants – Umuadi Benjamin Chinecherem (30), Nwabueze Kelvin (28), and Okonkwo Celestine (30) – are believed to be part of a gang that dispossesses residents of their valuables.
Police say efforts are ongoing to uncover their wider network and apprehend other accomplices.
Confirming the recoveries, the command’s spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, noted that the swift actions of the patrol teams had likely prevented further attacks on innocent members of the public.
CP Yemi Oyeniyi, the Commissioner of Police for Delta State, praised the operatives for their vigilance and reiterated that the command would continue to rely on proactive, intelligence-driven tactics to keep the state safe. All recovered items have been retained as evidence.
