The Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the decision of the Nigeria Police Force to unseal the party’s National Secretariat, calling it a contemptuous action.
The party alleged that the action of the police amounts to “aiding the takeover and occupation of the secretariat by agents of the Federal Government and APC apologists masquerading as PDP members, despite a pending appeal.”
The PDP noted that the judgment delivered by Justice Abdulmalik, which the police are allegedly acting under, has been appealed, and the police are aware of this.
The party thereafter accused the police of tampering with a pending case, which could render the Court of Appeal’s judgment nugatory.
The party expressed disappointment that the police, entrusted with protecting the law, are disobeying it, adding that the PDP had hoped “the new Inspector General of Police would act differently, but regreting that the police have consistently shown support for the Wike-backed APC apologists.”
The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong Essien, who signed the statement issued on Sunday urged PDP members to maintain peace and not breach public peace, promising that the party would take necessary steps within the law to protect genuine PDP members’ rights and privileges.
The PDP assured the public that it is hopeful the current state-sponsored persecution and one-party drive will end, and true democratic experience will return to the country.
It urged its members to bear the situation with hope, believing liberation will come soon.
The action of the police has raised concern about their impartiality, the statement noted, with the PDP accusing the police of acting in a partisan manner.
The statement said the struggle for control of the party continues, with the unsealing of the secretariat seen as a setback for the Turaki-led group, which said the party remains committed to defending its rights and interests.
The situation highlights Nigeria’s democratic challenges, with allegations of state-sponsored interference but the PDP’s statement is a plea for fairness and respect for the rule of law.
The outcome of this situation remains uncertain, but the PDP is determined to pursue all available avenues to protect its interests and restore its rights, with the hope that joy and liberation will return to the party.
