FAVOUR ISHEMBER, Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory chapter of the University of Lagos Alumni Association has extended financial support to 28 outstanding Senior Secondary School students drawn from the six Area Councils of Abuja, in a move aimed at reducing the burden of educational expenses on families.
The beneficiaries, all in their final year (SS3), were selected based on academic excellence and will have their school fees, levies, as well as examination costs for the West African Examinations Council and National Examinations Council fully covered under the scheme.
Speaking during the presentation, the Vice Chairperson of the association in the FCT, Julia Davis, disclosed that the selection process was merit-driven, noting that the 28 students emerged as top performers from across the councils.
According to her, the initiative also embraces inclusivity, as some of the awardees are students living with special needs. She expressed pride in their resilience and achievements, emphasizing that their success demonstrates the possibility of equal academic competition despite physical challenges.
She explained that each recipient would receive funding sufficient to cater for their external examinations and school-related expenses for the academic year. She further revealed that the scholarship programme is not a one-off intervention but an annual commitment of the alumni body.
Also speaking was the Mandate Secretary for Education in the FCT, Danlami Hayyo, who was represented by the Director/Secretary of the FCT Secondary Education Board, Fatima Gambo Babba, commended the association for its timely intervention.
She noted that many students in the territory struggle to meet basic educational costs, stressing that the scholarship would significantly ease the financial strain on parents and guardians.
While describing the initiative as impactful, she called on other non-governmental organisations and well-meaning individuals to emulate the gesture by supporting students facing similar challenges.
Chairman of the association’s scholarship committee, Emmanuel Emele, reiterated that the programme is specifically targeted at indigent students, with current focus on those in SS3 preparing for final examinations.
He added that the scholarship scheme has been sustained over the past three years and assured that the association remains committed to its continuation in the years ahead.
