Traffic gridlock in Abuja as rainstorm destroys newly built Kugbo Bus Terminal

FAVOUR ISHEMBER, Abuja

A heavy rainstorm on Tuesday afternoon wreaked havoc in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), destroying the yet-to-be-functioning Kugbo Bus Terminal and triggering massive traffic congestion along the busy Abuja-Keffi highway.

The downpour, which began at approximately 3:30 pm, was accompanied by strong winds that tore through the structure, blowing off the terminal’s roof and scattering debris across the Kugbo axis of the dual carriageway.

Eyewitnesses reported that the force of the wind uprooted significant portions of the roofing, leaving fragments of metal and other materials strewn across both sides of the road, thereby obstructing vehicular movement and causing heavy gridlock.

As a result, motorists were stranded for hours as traffic built up on both inbound and outbound lanes of the highway, a major route linking Abuja to neighboring communities and states.

In a surprising turn, scavengers braved the heavy rainfall to salvage materials from the разрушed structure. They were seen on both sides of the road, carting away valuable parts of the dislodged roof and other accessories littering the area.

The Kugbo Bus Terminal is one of three modern transport terminals inaugurated in June 2025 as part of efforts to improve urban transportation infrastructure within the FCT. However, the facility had yet to commence full operations before the incident occurred.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the extent of the damage or immediate plans for repairs, but the incident has raised concerns about the structural integrity and readiness of newly completed public infrastructure in the territory.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to clear the debris and restore normal traffic flow were ongoing.
