Wike seeks stronger media partnership, urges professionalism in political reporting

FAVOUR ISHEMBER, Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has commended DAAR Communications for its consistent support to the FCT Administration while calling for strengthened collaboration and professionalism in media practice, particularly amid Nigeria’s evolving political climate.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the management team of DAAR Communications in Abuja, Wike expressed appreciation for what he described as the organisation’s unwavering backing, noting that the media outfit was the first to formally pay such a visit to his administration.

“On behalf of the FCT administration and the residents of Abuja, I sincerely thank you and your team for this courtesy call. You are the first media outfit that has paid us a courtesy call, and we deeply appreciate your support,” he said.

The Minister acknowledged the critical role DAAR Communications has played in addressing issues concerning the administration, especially during challenging periods. According to him, the organisation has remained responsive whenever called upon to clarify or report on key developments.

Addressing a lingering land-related matter raised during the visit, Wike disclosed that he had already directed the Director of Lands to urgently liaise with relevant stakeholders to resolve the issue.

He emphasized the need for efficiency, warning against bureaucratic delays often associated with civil service procedures.
“I have already minuted it to him to ensure urgent resolution. I don’t want it handled in the usual civil service manner. It must be treated diligently so we can move forward,” he stated.

Wike further expressed the FCT Administration’s willingness to partner with DAAR Communications in advancing its ambitious projects, noting that bold initiatives, though daunting, are achievable with commitment. He described the organisation’s vision as potentially groundbreaking in Nigeria’s media landscape.

“It is a very ambitious project, but there is nothing wrong with being ambitious. With commitment, you can achieve it. It could be the first of its kind in Nigeria if it materializes,” he added.

The Minister, however, used the opportunity to caution media organisations against partisanship, especially during politically sensitive periods.

He stressed the importance of accuracy, fact-checking, and balanced reporting, warning that misinformation could mislead the public and erode trust.

“We are in a political period, and the media must strive to be non-partisan. Reporters must verify facts before publishing. Sometimes, what is presented to the public is misleading because proper research was not conducted,” Wike said.

Citing recent political developments, Wike defended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against criticisms, arguing that a proper understanding of events would absolve the electoral body of blame.

He maintained that political actors must take responsibility for internal crises rather than shifting blame to institutions like INEC or the judiciary.

“If you follow the scenario, you will know there is nothing to hold INEC responsible for. Politicians must put their houses in order instead of blaming external bodies,” he stated.
The Minister also decried what he described as persistent

misrepresentation of political realities in the media, particularly references to “factional” divisions even after court rulings had clarified such disputes.

“A court of competent jurisdiction has given judgment, yet people still talk about factions. If we do not respect court decisions, where are we heading?” he queried.

Wike urged journalists to hold political actors accountable by insisting on due process, noting that democracy can only thrive when rules are followed and accurately reported.

He further warned against the misuse of media platforms by disgruntled politicians to spread false narratives, urging media practitioners to uphold integrity and resist manipulation.

“The media should not be used by politicians who have failed. If you know a story is not correct, do not publish it. The damage can be enormous,” he cautioned.

The Minister also addressed the growing influence of social media, recounting a recent incident where false information about his alleged resignation was circulated, complete with a forged signature, triggering widespread confusion.

“People began calling from everywhere because of fake news. We must be careful in this era of social media where anything can spread rapidly,” he said.
Highlighting his personal commitment to staying informed, Wike revealed that he closely monitors multiple news channels daily to track narratives and respond appropriately.

“I watch the news regularly on AIT, Channels, TVC; so I know what is being said firsthand. I don’t rely on secondhand information,” he disclosed.

Reaffirming his commitment to continued collaboration, the Minister assured DAAR Communications of the FCT Administration’s readiness to work together in promoting accurate information and the development of the nation’s capital.

“I will continue to partner with you. Together, we can promote the image of the Federal Capital Territory,” Wike concluded.
