CYRIL MBAH, Abuja
The Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed optimism in the ability of the party to turn its fortunes around, despite ongoing internal disputes.
The party said that in obedience to the court advisory, the PDP Board of Trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, has constituted a committee to resolve outstanding issues and reposition the party for upcoming elections.
The National Chairman, Barrister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, said in a statement on Wednesday that its National Working Committee (NWC) has postponed scheduled meetings and de-escalated combative communication to demonstrate good faith, but regretted that the Wike- backed group has so far responded with hurtful rhetorics, dishonesty and derogatory statements.
While stating that all hope is not lost yet for genuine reconciliation, the Turaki-led PDP called on the other group to act in the party’s overall interest by prioritising the welfare of members seeking elective offices.
The statement said that leaders on both sides have the responsibility to break the ice and must start exploring pathways to lasting resolution of the leadership dispute.
It urged supporters on both sides to de-escalate communications to avoid jeopardizing peace efforts.
The party assured aspirants that it will field candidates for all elective offices and comply with the party’s constitution.
The Turaki-led PDP appreciated Nigerians who have shown interest in belonging to the party and registered for membership through the e-registration platform, despite recent challenges.
Despite the current problems, the party affirmed that it remains committed to defending and consolidating democracy, even as an opposition party, recognizing the importance of a virile opposition and an active civil society.
The PDP called on those in authority to align their actions with the will of the people, emphasising that ultimate power resides with the people.
The party expressed confidence in Governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde for their leadership and resilience but remained silent on the defection rumours surrounding the governors.
It reassured Nigerians that the party is alive and will participate in the forthcoming elections, as well as continue to offer a credible platform for robust political contests.
