The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced fresh impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor (Mrs.) Ngozi Odu.
The Assembly, during plenary presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, on Thursday, accused Governor Fubara and his deputy of actions allegedly in breach of the Nigerian Constitution.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Major Jack, in a notice read before the House made the accusations, alleging gross misconduct against Governor Fubara.
The accusations against the governor include: demolition of the assembly complex, extra budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and alleged refusal to obey the Supreme Court on the financial autonomy of the House.
Corroborating with the majority leader, Deputy majority Leader of the House, Linda Stewart also read a separate notice alleging gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Odu.
Among the allegations against the deputy governor are reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds, obstructing the Assembly from performing its constitutional duties as outlined in the 1999 Constitution.
Also conniving to allow unauthorised persons to occupy offices without proper screening and approaching another group of people for budgetary approval rather than the Rivers State House of Assembly, seizure of salaries and allowances accruing to the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Assembly Service Commission, amongst others.
In his remarks, Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule announced that the impeachment notice would be served on the governor within seven days, in line with constitutional requirements.
This is the second time the Rivers State House of Assembly is moving to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, having failed in their first attempt in October 2023.
