Two die as Anthony Joshua escapes death in autocrash

.Ogun, Lagos govts say renowned boxer in stable condition at hospital

A renowned global boxer, Anthony Joshua was involved in a road accident on Monday 29th December, 2025 in Makun, Ogun State.

The autocrash was said to have occurred along the busy highway of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Eyewitnesses report that the incident occurred around past 11am on Monday afternoon.

The vehicle carrying Joshua, a Lexus Jeep with the number plate, KRD 850 HN, reportedly collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are still being investigated.

An eyewitness who spoke to our correspondent said Joshua sustained minor injuries, saying that two people died on the spot.

The eyewitness stated that the accident happened just before Danco Filling Station in Makun, before Sagamu Interchange inward Ibadan axis of the road.

“It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him.

“There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed.

“His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash.

“Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived.

“The passenger beside the driver and the one beside Joshua died on the spot,” he said.

Fans have flooded social media with messages of concern, while local authorities began investigation to unravel the cause of the crash.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi said further updates would be communicated.

Meanwhile, the Lagos and Ogun State governments have disclosed that comprehensive clinical assessments by doctors have confirmed that both Joshua and other patient who are currently being hospitalized are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser, Information Ogun State and Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information, Lagos State

The statement read, “The Governments of Ogun and Lagos States wish to confirm that British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident earlier today along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

“The vehicle conveying a team of four reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in two fatalities.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident and pray that Almighty God grants them the strength to bear this difficult loss.

“Anthony Joshua and another passenger were immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos. Following comprehensive clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time. A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely.

“Anthony Joshua is conscious and has been in communication with his family.

“The Governments of Ogun and Lagos States are closely monitoring the situation and will ensure that the affected persons receive the best possible medical care. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have also commenced.

“We appreciate the concern shown by members of the public and kindly request privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family at this time.”
