.Demonstrators shake Enugu, Borno, other states amid tight security

Organized Labour union under the platform of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) alongside Civil Society organisations (CSOs), has berated Federal Government over rampaging insecurity noting that, “the fundamental rights of all Nigerians are sacrosanct.”
The organized labour and CSOs bemoaned that government failed woefully in discharging it’s responsibility as enshrined in the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
The Unions who staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday in Jos, carrying banners and placards with different inscriptions amidst insecurity concern warned that if Federal Government fails to do nothing they are going to shutdown the country without any prior notice.
Daily Champion reports that the protesters converged as early as 8:am and later proceeded to the Plateau State House of Assembly and Government House Little Rayfield where they presented a letter for onward delivery to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for necessary action.
They were demanding for the immediate return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes and avert future escalation of attacks in the communities, saying ” many communities were ransacked and taken over by the terrorists.
According to Comrade Eugene Manji, the NLC chairman Plateau State Chapter, “today we are here to register and express our displeasure to the Government of the Federation of Nigeria, from the state to the local government, and to the three tiers of government of this country.
We are all witnesses to the issue of insecurity.”
Manji who gave an insight on the rationale behind the protest, said it is a follow-up action of what they have already done on their May Day, (Workers’ Day 2025, celebration), where they expressed their displeasure about the issue of insecurity in Nigeria.
“And last week, we were in Lagos at the National Executive Council meeting of the NLC, and it was resolved that all the 36 states of the federation should act simultaneously.
“It is quite pertinent that you are in a country where your people are being killed like animals, and you do not even know until another country reminds you that you are a country of particular concern, like the United States of America did.
Look at our schools today on the Plateau. Students have been out of school for more than a month now because of insecurity.
By closing schools, we are encouraging these people, because Boko Haram says Western education is forbidden.
By the time we close schools, they have already succeeded in crippling education.
A country without education is already a doomed country. It is quite unfortunate that a country of over 250 million people could become uneducated.
Just imagine the level of insecurity this will produce.
“That is where we are today. In Niger State, about 300 students were picked from schools, and nobody could challenge them. About 100 have been released, but where are the rest?
That tells you the scale of the problem. In churches, in mosques, in Zamfara and other places, it is happening every day.
“What we are saying is that whether you are a Christian, a Muslim, or a free thinker, whatever you believe in, you are either directly or indirectly affected.
Either your person is affected, or you are affected.
“We are calling on the Office of the National Security Adviser to be more proactive and to work in robust synergy with all security agencies so that there will be proper coordination to fight the menace of insecurity”, comrade Manji stated.
Coordinator Civil Liberty Organisations, Steve Aluko expressed concern that if the Federal Government of Nigeria can deploy fighter jets and other machineries to mitigate a planned coup in Benin Republic within a twinkle of an eye, then, it is a serious indictment for the government of their inability to protect Nigerians.
“Despite the humongous resources channeled towards fighting insecurity, yet the situation continues to escalate.
Does the government of Nigeria have the hands on what we are facing, talking about kidnapping, banditry and terrorism?
“The problem is not beyond the government, and we want to see more workable action from the executive, legislative and the judiciary rather than mere rhetorics”, Aluko noted.
Also, The Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC), Borno state chapter has on Wednesday joined it’s counterparts across the nation on a peaceful protest against insecurity in the country.
The Borno State Police Command has successfully coordinated and provided adequate security deployment for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) procession held today 17th December, 2025 in Maiduguri.
The peaceful procession, which commenced from NUJ Junction and ended at Today’s Store off Gidan Madara Road Maiduguri, was well coordinated and orderly. .
The men and officers of the Nigerian police were on ground to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order.
No unwanted incident was recorded throughout the exercise, largely due to the high level of understanding, cooperation, and support received from the leadership and members of the NLC.
Vehicular and pedestrian movements were effectively managed, ensuring the free flow of traffic without obstruction to citizens’ lawful activities.
The Borno state police command in a statement issued by its spokesman, ASP Nahum Daso said the peaceful procession, which commenced from NUJ Junction and ended at Today’s Store off Gidan Madara Road Maiduguri, was peaceful due to and deployment of adequate security.
” He Commissioner of Police Borno State Command CP Naziru Abdulmajid psc, commends the conduct of all participants and reassures the public of the Command continued commitment to maintaining peace, public safety, and the protection of constitutional rights within the state.”, the standby said.

Also,The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Enugu state chapter Wednesday embarked on a protest against the escalating insecurity across Nigeria.
The protest brought Enugu metropolis to a standstill for hours as the protesters marched round the city in compliance with the nationwide protest over rising insecurity in the country.
The demonstration led by NLC Chairman Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, reflected deep concern over the pervasive threat to lives and property nationwide.
During the protest, participants marched through Enugu’s major streets, chanting slogans such as “another challenge! another challenge!!” and carrying placards with inscriptions, “Nigeria is bleeding,” “End terrorism, banditry and kidnapping now,” “End insecurity now,” and “Poverty fuels insecurity—create jobs, support local industries.”
Other signs called for protection of schools and citizens, urging the government to take decisive action rather than rhetorics.
Addressing the protesters, Nwigbo expressed grave disappointment that, in Nigeria, cows are safer than humans, stating, “Nobody is safe anymore in the country, not even the security personnel.”
He lamented that insecurity affects all sectors, such as students, teachers, workers, farmers, travelers, and even political figures, highlighting the country’s alarming state of chaos.
He emphasized that the primary responsibility of government is to ensure the security of its citizens’ lives and property.
He disclosed that the demonstration is to highlight the urgent need for government intervention to restore peace and security across Nigeria
“The country is bleeding,” he declared, adding that the NLC took a firm stand after its recent NEC meeting to raise awareness about the worsening situation.
Nwigbo also pointed out the paradox that cows are more protected than humans, criticizing the security lapses that have led to increased kidnappings and attacks.
He condemned a recent incident where a security chief in the North withdrew his team from guarding a school, only for the school to be subsequently attacked and children abducted, questioning the rationale behind such a decision.
He clarified that the protest is also a statement that the NLC is not part of any conspiracy contributing to the insecurity crisis, but rather a body standing for the safety and dignity of Nigerians.
