The Nigeria Federal Ministry of Health has assured the procurement of more efficient equipment at the national orthopaedic hospital in Jos, Plateau State, to enhance effective service delivery.
Permanent secretary of the ministry, Kachollom Daju gave the assurance while conducting an on-the-spot inspection of the facility.
Recall that the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Jos has officially commenced full clinical operations, offering specialized orthopaedic care to patients from Plateau and neighboring states.
The hospital provides a range of services, including trauma and reconstructive surgery, joint replacement, spine and paediatric orthopaedics, sports medicine, and limb reconstruction.
According to the permanent secretary, I came around to inspect the National Orthopaedic Hospital, one of the federal tertiary hospitals under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Health, and to see how much work has been done.
“The last time I came here, a few months ago, it was still under construction. I’m happy to say that the MD, Professor Onche, and his team have been able to set the hospital rolling and fully operational.
As of about two months ago — October, to be precise — we started conducting surgeries and receiving patients.”
She appreciates Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s support and collaboration, saying he has greatly supported the Federal Government by assisting with some of the construction work in the hospital.
“I also want to emphasize that this hospital is open to everyone. As a federal tertiary facility, you will, of course, receive referrals from other hospitals.
“We have a great team of doctors, consultants, and support health personnel working with the MD.
And we assure you that we are here — as the Federal Ministry of Health and as the National Orthopaedic Hospital — to save lives and to improve the health outcomes of Nigerians as best as we can.
She revealed 2025 has been an unusual year — very unusual — because we’ve not been able to access funding as we would have wanted.
“This affected our ability to procure equipment and expand the hospital at the pace we envisioned.
“However, we are looking forward to 2026. The people of Plateau and the surrounding states can expect better equipment, more personnel, and improved services.
“The waiver for equipment procurement — not only for the National Orthopaedic Hospital but for all federal tertiary hospitals — has already been approved by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
This will significantly improve health outcomes”, she noted.
