The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Lagos State Branch, has successfully concluded an eight-day community engagement and women’s empowerment programme across two communities-Ikota (Eti-Osa Division) and Aboru (Alimosho Division).
According to a release by the Lagos State NRCS Communications officer, Olushola Tejuosho, on Thursday, the programme is part of the organization’s efforts to strengthen its Protection, Gender & Inclusion (PGI) Safe Place initiative.
From November 25 to 27, 2025, teams of trained Red Cross volunteers conducted intensive sensitization campaigns on key protection issues, including Protection, Gender & Inclusion (PGI), Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) prevention, Zero Tolerance for Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), and how community members can access and support the Safe Place for Women.
The sensitization activities covered households, youth groups, men’s associations, traditional leaders, and community governance structures. Traditional rulers and community leaders in both Ikota and Aboru communities expressed unwavering support for the initiative and commended the Red Cross for prioritizing the safety and dignity of women.
As part of the empowerment component of the project, the Branch commenced a hands-on skill acquisition training programme for women between November 28 and December 3, 2025. Participants were equipped with practical livelihood skills, including the production of liquid soap and shampoo, aimed at improving household income and enabling women to become more economically self-reliant.
The eight-day programme ended on December 3, 2025, with a closing ceremony that featured the presentation of motivational items to participating women. In line with sustainability measures, the Branch also handed over 50 plastic chairs each to the 2 community leaders the Olori of Aboru Kingdom and the CDA Chairman of Ikota Community to strengthen the continued use of Safe Place facilities for women.
The Lagos State Branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society reaffirmed its commitment to building safer communities, empowering women with life-changing skills, and ensuring widespread community awareness on the prevention of SGBV, adherence to PSEA standards, and promotion of inclusion and dignity for all.
