…condemns life sentence of Nnamdi Kanu, demands release

The Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT) has expressed grave concern over the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, citing the recent spate of killings, abductions, and terrorist attacks across the country.
In a statement, ILT President, Professor Elochukwu Amucheazi and Secretary, Professor Jerry Chukwuokolo appealed to the United States government to intervene in the crisis, warning that the situation could lead to a total breakdown of law and order in the country.
Rising Insecurity and Genocide Concerns
ILT highlighted the recent attacks on Christians, including the killing of 101 individuals in 14 days, and the abduction of 25 female students in Kebbi state.
The group condemned the Nigerian government’s inaction, stating that it has emboldened terrorists and led to a sense of impunity.
Call for US Intervention
Igbo Leaders of Thought welcomed the US government’s interest in stopping the genocide of Christians in Nigeria and appealed for immediate intervention.
The group suggested that the US government could invoke the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act to impose sanctions on Nigerian entities responsible for human rights abuses.
Restructuring Nigeria
ILT emphasized the need for Nigeria to be restructured, allowing states to have their own security commands. The group cited the Aburi Accord of 1967, which agreed to this arrangement, as a model for resolving the country’s security challenges.
Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial and Conviction
The ILT condemned the life sentence handed down to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as unjust and politically motivated.
The group demanded his immediate release, citing concerns over the fairness of the trial.
Conclusion
ILT warned that the situation in Nigeria could escalate into a full-scale war if not addressed urgently.
The group called on the Nigerian government to engage in a national dialogue to address the root causes of the crisis and work towards restructuring the country.
