As the 138th edition of the China Import and Export Fair, popularly known as the Canton Fair, comes to a close today in Guangzhou, the world’s largest trade exhibition once again lived up to its reputation as a barometer of global commerce, bridging nations, products, and innovations across industries.
The fair, which opened in three distinct phases throughout October, brought together thousands of exhibitors and buyers from over 200 countries, underscoring China’s central role in international trade and economic recovery amid global supply chain realignments.
A Three-Phase Global Marketplace:
The Canton Fair 2025 began on October 15, with the first phase focusing on electronics, machinery, home appliances, and new-energy technologies. Exhibitors unveiled the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, green energy solutions, and smart manufacturing—areas that highlighted China’s commitment to sustainable industrial transformation.
The second phase, which ran from October 23 to 27, shifted the spotlight to consumer goods, gifts, and home decorations. African, Middle Eastern, and Latin American buyers were particularly active, seeking competitively priced but high-quality merchandise for their markets. Nigerian and Ghanaian trade delegations were notably present, reflecting West Africa’s growing trade engagement with China.
The third and final phase, which concludes today, centered on textiles, garments, food, health products, and recreational goods. The textile section attracted major attention from Southeast Asian and European buyers as China continues to diversify its manufacturing appeal beyond electronics and heavy industry.
Digital Expansion and Innovation:
This year’s fair stood out for its strong digital integration. The hybrid format—combining in-person and online exhibitions—enabled thousands of remote buyers to connect with suppliers through the Canton Fair’s official digital platform.
Chinese trade officials revealed that over 100,000 online product displays and thousands of virtual negotiations took place, marking another milestone in the fair’s digital transformation strategy that began during the pandemic years.
In the words of Xu Bing, Deputy Director of the China Foreign Trade Centre, “Canton Fair 2025 showcases not only Chinese manufacturing strength but also our new vision for global trade connectivity powered by digital technology.”
Sustainability and Green Trade:
Another strong theme this year was sustainability. Many exhibitors promoted eco-friendly products and production methods. Electric vehicles, solar panels, biodegradable packaging, and energy-efficient appliances dominated the first phase. The fair also hosted several forums on “Green Trade and Carbon Neutrality,” attracting policy experts and investors seeking to align global trade practices with climate goals.
Foreign Participation and African Presence:
African participation continued to grow in 2025, with trade representatives from Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and South Africa attending in record numbers.
The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) led a delegation to explore new export opportunities for agricultural produce, leather goods, and fashion items. Nigerian business representatives praised the fair’s organization, networking opportunities, and the quality of Chinese technology available for industrial collaboration.
One Nigerian exhibitor, Mr Chizuru Ngozi of Abia State based Afor Imenyi Agro Farms, said the fair “provided a platform to showcase Nigeria’s potential in natural food processing and to secure partnerships for equipment supply.”
Economic Impact and Global Significance:
Experts believe that the 2025 Canton Fair reaffirmed China’s place as a trade powerhouse despite global economic headwinds. The fair reportedly recorded over USD 38 billion in provisional deals, signaling renewed optimism for world trade.
According to economic analysts, this year’s event also highlighted a gradual shift toward quality-driven exports rather than volume-based trade, as China seeks to enhance brand reputation and competitiveness in global markets.
Closing Day Highlights:
As the fair concludes today, closing ceremonies feature cultural performances, appreciation awards for outstanding exhibitors, and strategic announcements for next year’s spring edition. Many delegates are departing Guangzhou with new business partnerships and a clearer understanding of post-pandemic global market dynamics.
Trade officials emphasize that the fair’s success demonstrates the resilience of global supply chains and the adaptability of international commerce in a rapidly changing world.
Looking Ahead:
The next edition of the Canton Fair is scheduled for April 2026, with organizers promising expanded participation from developing nations and a deeper focus on digital innovation, green technology, and smart trade ecosystems.
For now, as lights dim on the 2025 Autumn Canton Fair, one truth remains clear: Guangzhou continues to be the heartbeat of global trade, and the fair remains the ultimate meeting ground for businesses shaping the future of commerce.
