It is with profound reverence and heartfelt emotion that we gather today to celebrate the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Pharm. Chief Oludolapo* Ibukun Akinkugbe, CFR, CON, FPSN, FPCPharm, FNAPharm — a true icon whose life of purpose, service, and unwavering commitment to excellence has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s pharmaceutical landscape, healthcare system, and nation-building efforts.
Chief Akinkugbe’s journey was a testament to the power of intellect, discipline, and visionary leadership. Born with extraordinary talents, he distinguished himself early as one of Nigeria’s pioneering pharmacists—the first generation to graduate in pharmacy within our nation. His brilliance shone brightly across academia, industry, and professional circles, setting standards that continue to inspire generations.
As the founding Chairman of the Board of Management of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria’s first teaching hospital, he played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s healthcare education and service delivery. His pioneering spirit was further exemplified by his leadership as the first indigenous Chairman of Glaxo Nigeria Limited (now GSK) and Procter and Gamble Nigeria. He also founded Interpharma Nigeria Limited and Jolad Pharmaceuticals Limited, both of which became paragons of ethical pharmaceutical enterprise in Africa.
Throughout his illustrious career, Chief Akinkugbe held numerous trailblazing positions. He served as the General Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Pharmacists in 1950, later becoming the President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, and a founding fellow of both the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and the Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy. His leadership was rooted in integrity, mentorship, and a steadfast dedication to the ideals of the pharmacy profession. He passionately believed that pharmacy is both a science and a service—a vocation driven by compassion, innovation, and ethical practice.
Chief Akinkugbe’s influence extended beyond his professional achievements. He was a mentor to many, inspiring countless pharmacists, scientists, and entrepreneurs to pursue excellence and serve with humility. His mentorship created pathways for others to succeed, and his example continues to guide the profession today. I personally had the honor of visiting him on his 96th birthday, December 16, 2024. His warmth, humility, and encouragement during that visit left an indelible impression—a reflection of his deep interest in nurturing future leaders.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Nigeria honored him with the prestigious titles of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) and Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). His life embodied the virtues of professionalism, patriotism, and philanthropy. Beyond his professional pursuits, he was a respected community leader, an advocate for education, and a man of deep faith. As the Asiwaju of Ondo Kingdom, he carried his heritage with pride and humility, bridging the old and new Nigeria with a legacy of excellence and integrity.
Chief Akinkugbe’s legacy is etched into the institutions he helped establish, the professionals he mentored, and the ethical standards he upheld. His life exemplifies that greatness is not merely measured by personal achievements but by the positive impact one leaves behind—an impact that uplifts others and sustains future generations.
As the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and the Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy mourn his passing, we do so with immense gratitude for a life well-lived. His legacy continues to illuminate our path, reminding us that true greatness lies in service, dignity, and grace.
Today, we honor Pharm. Chief Oludolapo Ibukun Akinkugbe—a builder, a mentor, a gentleman, and a beacon of excellence. His light has not gone out; it shines ever brighter in our hearts and in the enduring work he inspired.
In the words of our President, Lere Baale: “The true measure of a man’s greatness is not in what he owns, but in what he leaves behind that uplifts others.”
