Lagos, Nigeria – Over 50 women in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State received free cervical cancer screenings during a recent health initiative organized by the Hon Okey Joe Foundation in partnership with the My Body My Asset Foundation.
The event, which took place in Ejigbo, was designed to promote early detection and raise awareness about cervical cancer.
Hon. Okey Joe Onuakalusi, the member representing Oshodi-Isolo 2 Federal Constituency, urged women to undergo regular screenings to protect themselves against the disease. He was represented by the Labour Party Local Government Chairman for Oshodi-Isolo, Hon. Bishop Remigius Agu.
“Cervical cancer is a leading cause of death among women globally, but early detection significantly improves the chances of successful treatment and survival,” Hon. Agu stated on the lawmaker’s behalf. He encouraged women of reproductive age to take full advantage of such health initiatives to maintain their well-being.
The Founder and President of My Body My Asset Foundation, Ambassador Mrs. Franca Eze, commended Hon. Onuakalusi for the partnership. She noted that the collaboration marked the NGO’s fifth anniversary and was particularly significant as it was the first time a male lawmaker had partnered with them on a free cervical cancer screening.
“This is laudable, and he must be commended,” Mrs. Eze said. She explained that the primary cause of cervical cancer is a persistent infection with high-risk types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). While HPV often clears on its own, a long-lasting infection can lead to abnormal cell changes that may develop into cancer if left untreated.
The Programme Director of the HOJ Foundation, Mrs. Uchenna Oformata, said the partnership was initiated because many women are unaware of their cervical cancer status.
“Today’s event is to create awareness. As October is Cancer Awareness Month, the Hon Okey Joe Foundation thought it wise to partner to bring this initiative to our constituency so that many women can benefit,” Mrs. Oformata explained.
Participants at the event expressed their gratitude for the initiative, stating that it provided a valuable opportunity to check their health status.
